1 καὶ ἐγενήθη εἰσελθόντος Δαυιδ καὶ τῶν ἀνδρῶν αὐτοῦ εἰς Σεκελακ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ τρίτῃ καὶ Αμαληκ ἐπέθετο ἐπὶ τὸν νότον καὶ ἐπὶ Σεκελακ καὶ ἐπάταξεν τὴν Σεκελακ καὶ ἐνεπύρισεν αὐτὴν ἐν πυρί 2 καὶ τὰς γυναῖκας καὶ πάντα τὰ ἐν αὐτῇ ἀπὸ μικροῦ ἕως μεγάλου οὐκ ἐθανάτωσαν ἄνδρα καὶ γυναῖκα ἀλ{L'} ᾐχμαλώτευσαν καὶ ἀπῆλθον εἰς τὴν ὁδὸν αὐτῶν 3 καὶ ἦλθεν Δαυιδ καὶ οἱ ἄνδρες αὐτοῦ εἰς τὴν πόλιν καὶ ἰδοὺ ἐμπεπύρισται ἐν πυρί αἱ δὲ γυναῖκες αὐτῶν καὶ οἱ υἱοὶ αὐτῶν καὶ αἱ θυγατέρες αὐτῶν ᾐχμαλωτευμένοι 4 καὶ ἦρεν Δαυιδ καὶ οἱ ἄνδρες αὐτοῦ τὴν φωνὴν αὐτῶν καὶ ἔκλαυσαν ἕως ὅτου οὐκ ἦν ἐν αὐτοῖς ἰσχὺς ἔτι κλαίειν 5 καὶ ἀμφότεραι αἱ γυναῖκες Δαυιδ ᾐχμαλωτεύθησαν Αχινοομ ἡ Ιεζραηλῖτις καὶ Αβιγαια ἡ γυνὴ Ναβαλ τοῦ Καρμηλίου 6 καὶ ἐθλίβη Δαυιδ σφόδρα ὅτι εἶπεν ὁ λαὸς λιθοβολῆσαι αὐτόν ὅτι κατώδυνος ψυχὴ παντὸς τοῦ λαοῦ ἑκάστου ἐπὶ τοὺς υἱοὺς αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπὶ τὰς θυγατέρας αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐκραταιώθη Δαυιδ ἐν κυρίῳ θεῷ αὐτοῦ 7 καὶ εἶπεν Δαυιδ πρὸς Αβιαθαρ τὸν ἱερέα υἱὸν Αχιμελεχ προσάγαγε τὸ εφουδ 8 καὶ ἐπηρώτησεν Δαυιδ διὰ τοῦ κυρίου λέγων εἰ καταδιώξω ὀπίσω τοῦ γεδδουρ τούτου εἰ καταλήμψομαι αὐτούς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ καταδίωκε ὅτι καταλαμβάνων καταλήμψῃ καὶ ἐξαιρούμενος ἐξελῇ 1 When David and his men reached Siceleg, the next day but one, they found that the Amalecites from the south had attacked and overpowered it, and burnt it to the ground; 2 the women, too, they had carried off. They did not put anyone to death, of high or low degree, but carried off all they found, and so went on their way. 3 So David and his men, coming back to the city to find it burnt down, and their wives and sons and daughters taken prisoner, 4 raised a great cry of lamentation, and wept till their tears would flow no more. 5 David’s two wives, Achinoam from Jezrahel and Abigail, Nabal’s widow from Carmel, had been carried off like the rest, 6 and his was a heavy lot to bear; his followers came near to stoning him, so sore were their hearts at the loss of son and daughter. But David found refuge in the Lord his God. 7 Bring out the sacred mantle, he said to the priest Abiathar, Achimelech’s son, and when Abiathar had brought it, 8 he asked the Lord, Shall I give these freebooters chase? Is there hope of overtaking them? And the Lord said, Go in pursuit; past doubt thou wilt overtake them, and rob them of their prey.
9 καὶ ἐπορεύθη Δαυιδ αὐτὸς καὶ οἱ ἑξακόσιοι ἄνδρες με{T'} αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔρχονται ἕως τοῦ χειμάρρου Βοσορ καὶ οἱ περισσοὶ ἔστησαν 10 καὶ κατεδίωξεν ἐν τετρακοσίοις ἀνδράσιν ὑπέστησαν δὲ διακόσιοι ἄνδρες οἵτινες ἐκάθισαν πέραν τοῦ χειμάρρου τοῦ Βοσορ 11 καὶ εὑρίσκουσιν ἄνδρα Αἰγύπτιον ἐν ἀγρῷ καὶ λαμβάνουσιν αὐτὸν καὶ ἄγουσιν αὐτὸν πρὸς Δαυιδ ἐν ἀγρῷ καὶ διδόασιν αὐτῷ ἄρτον καὶ ἔφαγεν καὶ ἐπότισαν αὐτὸν ὕδωρ 12 καὶ διδόασιν αὐτῷ κλάσμα παλάθης καὶ ἔφαγεν καὶ κατέστη τὸ πνεῦμα αὐτοῦ ἐν αὐτῷ ὅτι οὐ βεβρώκει ἄρτον καὶ οὐ πεπώκει ὕδωρ τρεῖς ἡμέρας καὶ τρεῖς νύκτας 13 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Δαυιδ τίνος σὺ εἶ καὶ πόθεν εἶ καὶ εἶπεν τὸ παιδάριον τὸ Αἰγύπτιον ἐγώ εἰμι δοῦλος ἀνδρὸς Αμαληκίτου καὶ κατέλιπέν με ὁ κύριός μου ὅτι ἠνωχλήθην ἐγὼ σήμερον τριταῖος 14 καὶ ἡμεῖς ἐπεθέμεθα ἐπὶ νότον τοῦ Χολθι καὶ ἐπὶ τὰ τῆς Ιουδαίας μέρη καὶ ἐπὶ νότον Χελουβ καὶ τὴν Σεκελακ ἐνεπυρίσαμεν ἐν πυρί 15 καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτὸν Δαυιδ εἰ κατάξεις με ἐπὶ τὸ γεδδουρ τοῦτο καὶ εἶπεν ὄμοσον δή μοι κατὰ τοῦ θεοῦ μὴ θανατώσειν με καὶ μὴ παραδοῦναί με εἰς χεῖρας τοῦ κυρίου μου καὶ κατάξω σε ἐπὶ τὸ γεδδουρ τοῦτο 16 καὶ κατήγαγεν αὐτὸν ἐκεῖ καὶ ἰδοὺ οὗτοι διακεχυμένοι ἐπὶ πρόσωπον πάσης τῆς γῆς ἐσθίοντες καὶ πίνοντες καὶ ἑορτάζοντες ἐν πᾶσι τοῖς σκύλοις τοῖς μεγάλοις οἷς ἔλαβον ἐκ γῆς ἀλλοφύλων καὶ ἐκ γῆς Ιουδα 17 καὶ ἦλθεν ἐ{P'} αὐτοὺς Δαυιδ καὶ ἐπάταξεν αὐτοὺς ἀπὸ ἑωσφόρου ἕως δείλης καὶ τῇ ἐπαύριον καὶ οὐκ ἐσώθη ἐξ αὐτῶν ἀνὴρ ὅτι ἀλ{L'} ἢ τετρακόσια παιδάρια ἃ ἦν ἐπιβεβηκότα ἐπὶ τὰς καμήλους καὶ ἔφυγον 9 So David and his six hundred followers marched all the way to the ravine of Besor, where some, for very weariness, must halt; 10 but David himself still gave chase, with four hundred men at his back, leaving the other two hundred to rest from their weariness in the ravine of Besor. 11 Then they came upon an Egyptian, out there on the plain, and brought him to David; but first they must give him bread and water, 12 and part of a cake of dried figs, and two bunches of raisins; he must be restored and revived, after three days and three nights without food or drink. 13 When David asked who he was, whence he came and whither he was bound, he said, I am a serving-man from Egypt; my master is an Amalecite; three days ago I fell sick, and he left me behind here. 14 We had been making a foray over the southern border of the Cherethites, against Juda, too, and the south of Caleb, and we burned Siceleg to the ground. 15 Then David asked him, Canst thou shew me where to find the company of which thou speakest? First, said he, thou must needs swear to me in God’s name that thou wilt neither kill me nor give me up into my master’s power; then I will shew thee where this company is to be found. So David took the oath asked of him, 16 and the Egyptian led him to where they lay, scattered pell-mell over the ground, eating and drinking and making holiday over their plunder, the spoils they had won from the Philistine country and from Juda. 17 All the rest of that day and all the next David drove them before him, and not one man escaped, except four hundred drivers who mounted their camels and fled. 15 Dixitque ei David: Potes me ducere ad cuneum istum?
20 And as he came home, driving before him all the sheep and cattle he had won, the cry rose, This is David’s booty. 21 So he reached the two hundred men that halted, too weary to follow, and were left behind in the ravine of Besor; and as they came out to meet him and his followers, David went up and gave them friendly greeting. 22 But there were churlish, graceless fellows among his own following who reasoned thus: Here are men that did not bear us company; for them, then, no share in the booty we have recovered. Let each of them take his own wife and children, and with these go away content. 23 Nay, brethren, David answered, that will not serve. All these gifts the Lord has given, besides protecting us and winning us the mastery over these marauding enemies. 24 Over this you shall get no hearing; the man that stays behind with the baggage has the same rights as the man who went into battle, all must share alike. 25 Ever since that day this rule has been recognized and established; it is the law still observed in Israel.
26 καὶ ἦλθεν Δαυιδ εἰς Σεκελακ καὶ ἀπέστειλεν τοῖς πρεσβυτέροις Ιουδα τῶν σκύλων καὶ τοῖς πλησίον αὐτοῦ λέγων ἰδοὺ ἀπὸ τῶν σκύλων τῶν ἐχθρῶν κυρίου 27 τοῖς ἐν Βαιθσουρ καὶ τοῖς ἐν Ραμα νότου καὶ τοῖς ἐν Ιεθθορ 28 καὶ τοῖς ἐν Αροηρ καὶ τοῖς Αμμαδι καὶ τοῖς ἐν Σαφι καὶ τοῖς ἐν Εσθιε καὶ τοῖς ἐν Γεθ καὶ τοῖς ἐν Κιναν καὶ τοῖς ἐν Σαφεκ καὶ τοῖς ἐν Θιμαθ 29 καὶ τοῖς ἐν Καρμήλῳ καὶ τοῖς ἐν ταῖς πόλεσιν τοῦ Ιεραμηλι καὶ τοῖς ἐν ταῖς πόλεσιν τοῦ Κενεζι 30 καὶ τοῖς ἐν Ιεριμουθ καὶ τοῖς ἐν Βηρσαβεε καὶ τοῖς ἐν Νοο 31 καὶ τοῖς ἐν Χεβρων καὶ εἰς πάντας τοὺς τόπους οὓς διῆλθεν Δαυιδ ἐκεῖ αὐτὸς καὶ οἱ ἄνδρες αὐτοῦ 26 When David reached Siceleg, he sent presents to the elders of the neighbouring cities in Juda, bidding them accept his offering taken out of the spoil of the Lord’s enemies. 27 These were Bethel, Ramoth in the South, Jether, 28 Aroer, Sephamoth, Esthamo, 29 Rachal, the cities of Jerameel, the cities of Ceni, 30 Arama, the Hollow of Asan, Athach, 31 and Hebron; and other places besides, where David and his men had once made their home.
