1 καὶ ἐβασίλευσεν Ιωσαφατ υἱὸς αὐτοῦ ἀν{T'} αὐτοῦ καὶ κατίσχυσεν Ιωσαφατ ἐπὶ τὸν Ισραηλ 2 καὶ ἔδωκεν δύναμιν ἐν πάσαις ταῖς πόλεσιν Ιουδα ταῖς ὀχυραῖς καὶ κατέστησεν ἡγουμένους ἐν πάσαις ταῖς πόλεσιν Ιουδα καὶ ἐν πόλεσιν Εφραιμ ἃς προκατελάβετο Ασα ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ 3 καὶ ἐγένετο κύριος μετὰ Ιωσαφατ ὅτι ἐπορεύθη ἐν ὁδοῖς τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ ταῖς πρώταις καὶ οὐκ ἐξεζήτησεν τὰ εἴδωλα 4 ἀλλὰ κύριον τὸν θεὸν τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ ἐξεζήτησεν καὶ ἐν ταῖς ἐντολαῖς τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ ἐπορεύθη καὶ οὐχ ὡς τοῦ Ισραηλ τὰ ἔργα 5 καὶ κατηύθυνεν κύριος τὴν βασιλείαν ἐν χειρὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔδωκεν πᾶς Ιουδα δῶρα τῷ Ιωσαφατ καὶ ἐγένετο αὐτῷ πλοῦτος καὶ δόξα πολλή 6 καὶ ὑψώθη καρδία αὐτοῦ ἐν ὁδῷ κυρίου καὶ ἔτι ἐξῆρεν τὰ ὑψηλὰ καὶ τὰ ἄλση ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς Ιουδα 1 The throne passed to his son Josaphat, who made his territories secure against threat from Israel; 2 all the fortified cities of Juda he garrisoned, and kept troops on guard throughout Juda, and in the cities his father Asa had taken from Ephraim. 3 Josaphat reigned, and the Lord was with him, because the first years of his father (David)[1] were the example he followed; he put his trust, not in gods of the country-side, 4 but in his own father’s God; kept close to the divine commandments, far from the sins of Israel. 5 So the Lord gave him a firm hold on the reins of government; from all parts of Juda gifts came to Josaphat, till riches and renown were his in abundance. 6 Boldly he upheld the Lord’s commandments, sweeping away hill-shrine and forest sanctuary from Juda.[2] 1 Regnavit autem Josaphat filius ejus pro eo, et invaluit contra Israël. 2 Constituitque militum numeros in cunctis urbibus Juda quæ erant vallatæ muris.
7 καὶ ἐν τῷ τρίτῳ ἔτει τῆς βασιλείας αὐτοῦ ἀπέστειλεν τοὺς ἡγουμένους αὐτοῦ καὶ τοὺς υἱοὺς τῶν δυνατῶν τὸν Αβδιαν καὶ Ζαχαριαν καὶ Ναθαναηλ καὶ Μιχαιαν διδάσκειν ἐν πόλεσιν Ιουδα 8 καὶ με{T'} αὐτῶν οἱ Λευῖται Σαμουιας καὶ Ναθανιας καὶ Ζαβδιας καὶ Ασιηλ καὶ Σεμιραμωθ καὶ Ιωναθαν καὶ Αδωνιας καὶ Τωβιας οἱ Λευῖται καὶ με{T'} αὐτῶν Ελισαμα καὶ Ιωραμ οἱ ἱερεῖς 9 καὶ ἐδίδασκον ἐν Ιουδα καὶ με{T'} αὐτῶν βύβλος νόμου κυρίου καὶ διῆλθον ἐν ταῖς πόλεσιν Ιουδα καὶ ἐδίδασκον τὸν λαόν 7 In the third year of his reign, he would have some of his chief officers go out and give instruction in the townships of Juda, Benhail, Obdias, Zacharias, Nathanael, and Michaeas, 8 and with them certain Levites, Semeias, Nathanias, Zabadias, Asael, Semiramoth, Jonathan, Adonias, Tobias and Tob-Adonias, and two priests, Elisama and Joram. 9 They took a copy of the Lord’s law with them, the better to instruct the men of Juda, and went round all its cities, teaching the common folk.
10 καὶ ἐγένετο ἔκστασις κυρίου ἐπὶ πάσαις ταῖς βασιλείαις τῆς γῆς ταῖς κύκλῳ Ιουδα καὶ οὐκ ἐπολέμουν πρὸς Ιωσαφατ 11 καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν ἀλλοφύλων ἔφερον τῷ Ιωσαφατ δῶρα καὶ ἀργύριον καὶ δόματα καὶ οἱ Ἄραβες ἔφερον αὐτῷ κριοὺς προβάτων ἑπτακισχιλίους ἑπτακοσίους 12 καὶ ἦν Ιωσαφατ πορευόμενος μείζων ἕως εἰς ὕψος καὶ ᾠκοδόμησεν οἰκήσεις ἐν τῇ Ιουδαίᾳ καὶ πόλεις ὀχυράς 13 καὶ ἔργα πολλὰ ἐγένετο αὐτῷ ἐν τῇ Ιουδαίᾳ καὶ ἄνδρες πολεμισταὶ δυνατοὶ ἰσχύοντες ἐν Ιερουσαλημ 14 καὶ οὗτος ἀριθμὸς αὐτῶν κα{T'} οἴκους πατριῶν αὐτῶν τῷ Ιουδα χιλίαρχοι Εδνας ὁ ἄρχων καὶ με{T'} αὐτοῦ υἱοὶ δυνατοὶ δυνάμεως τριακόσιαι χιλιάδες 15 καὶ με{T'} αὐτὸν Ιωαναν ὁ ἡγούμενος καὶ με{T'} αὐτοῦ διακόσιαι ὀγδοήκοντα χιλιάδες 16 καὶ με{T'} αὐτὸν Αμασιας ὁ τοῦ Ζαχρι ὁ προθυμούμενος τῷ κυρίῳ καὶ με{T'} αὐτοῦ διακόσιαι χιλιάδες δυνατοὶ δυνάμεως 17 καὶ ἐκ τοῦ Βενιαμιν δυνατὸς δυνάμεως Ελιαδα καὶ με{T'} αὐτοῦ τοξόται καὶ πελτασταὶ διακόσιαι χιλιάδες 18 καὶ με{T'} αὐτὸν Ιωζαβαδ καὶ με{T'} αὐτοῦ ἑκατὸν ὀγδοήκοντα χιλιάδες δυνατοὶ πολέμου 19 οὗτοι οἱ λειτουργοῦντες τῷ βασιλεῖ ἐκτὸς ὧν ἔδωκεν ὁ βασιλεὺς ἐν ταῖς πόλεσιν ταῖς ὀχυραῖς ἐν πάσῃ τῇ Ιουδαίᾳ 10 Never a king in all the countries about Juda durst levy war against Josaphat, such terror the Lord had struck into their hearts; 11 the very Philistines brought him gifts, and paid a tribute of silver, and the Arabs must bring in their herds, seven thousand seven hundred rams and as many goats. 12 Josaphat, then, grew to great magnificence, filling Juda with fortresses and walled towns; 13 and all through the cities of Juda he had store in abundance. At Jerusalem, he was surrounded by brave warriors, 14 clans thus enrolled: from Juda, three hundred thousand fighting men under the command of Ednas, one of his chieftains; 15 two hundred and eighty thousand under Johanan, 16 and two hundred thousand under Amasias son of Zechri, that was set apart for the Lord’s service. 17 And (from Benjamin)[3] two hundred thousand with bow and spear under brave Eliada, 18 and a hundred and eighty thousand, well equipped for battle, under Jozabad. 19 All these were close to the king’s side, not counting those he had marshalled in the walled cities from end to end of Juda.
