2 Moses gathered all Israel round him, and said to them, Your own eyes have witnessed, in the land of Egypt, the Lord’s dealings with Pharao and his court and all his kingdom; 3 the challenge of all those wonders and portents, plain to your view. 4 But to this day the Lord has not enlightened your hearts; yours are blind eyes, yours are deaf ears still. 5 Has he not been your guide all through those forty years in the desert? And all that time the garments that covered you did not wear out, the shoes on your feet did not perish with age; 6 you had no bread with you, no wine or strong drink, but you ate and drank your fill; and can you doubt that you have the Lord your God to protect you?[1] 7 And here, at our journey’s end, it is still the same; Sehon King of Hesebon and Og king of Basan came out to give us battle, but we conquered them, 8 and divided up their territory between Ruben and Gad and half the tribe of Manasses. 9 Hold fast, then, to the terms of this covenant, and fulfil them if you would order your lives as wise men do. 1 Hæc sunt verba fœderis quod præcepit Dominus Moysi ut feriret cum filiis Israël in terra Moab: præter illud fœdus, quod cum eis pepigit in Horeb.
10 ὑμεῖς ἑστήκατε πάντες σήμερον ἐναντίον κυρίου τοῦ θεοῦ ὑμῶν οἱ ἀρχίφυλοι ὑμῶν καὶ ἡ γερουσία ὑμῶν καὶ οἱ κριταὶ ὑμῶν καὶ οἱ γραμματοεισαγωγεῖς ὑμῶν πᾶς ἀνὴρ Ισραηλ 11 αἱ γυναῖκες ὑμῶν καὶ τὰ ἔκγονα ὑμῶν καὶ ὁ προσήλυτος ὁ ἐν μέσῳ τῆς παρεμβολῆς ὑμῶν ἀπὸ ξυλοκόπου ὑμῶν καὶ ἕως ὑδροφόρου ὑμῶν 12 παρελθεῖν ἐν τῇ διαθήκῃ κυρίου τοῦ θεοῦ σου καὶ ἐν ταῖς ἀραῖς αὐτοῦ ὅσα κύριος ὁ θεός σου διατίθεται πρὸς σὲ σήμερον 13 ἵνα στήσῃ σε αὐτῷ εἰς λαόν καὶ αὐτὸς ἔσται σου θεός ὃν τρόπον εἶπέν σοι καὶ ὃν τρόπον ὤμοσεν τοῖς πατράσιν σου Αβρααμ καὶ Ισαακ καὶ Ιακωβ 14 καὶ οὐχ ὑμῖν μόνοις ἐγὼ διατίθεμαι τὴν διαθήκην ταύτην καὶ τὴν ἀρὰν ταύτην 15 ἀλλὰ καὶ τοῖς ὧδε οὖσι με{Q'} ἡμῶν σήμερον ἐναντίον κυρίου τοῦ θεοῦ ὑμῶν καὶ τοῖς μὴ οὖσιν με{Q'} ἡμῶν ὧδε σήμερον 10 You stand here, all of you, in the presence of the Lord your God, for a single purpose, leaders of tribes with their tribes around them, elders, counsellors, the whole assembly of Israel; 11 your children, your wives, and the aliens that share your camp; servants, too, that hew wood and draw water at your bidding. 12 It is to enter into a covenant with the Lord your God, a sworn covenant he would make with you this day; 13 he would make you his people, and be himself your God; such is the promise he has made to you, such was the oath he took to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. 14 And it is not only with you that I ratify this covenant, this oath; 15 it is with others, too, that are not here to make it. 10 Vos statis hodie cuncti coram Domino Deo vestro, principes vestri, et tribus, ac majores natu, atque doctores, omnis populus Israël, 11 liberi et uxores vestræ, et advena qui tecum moratur in castris, exceptis lignorum cæsoribus, et his qui comportant aquas: 12 ut transeas in fœdere Domini Dei tui, et in jurejurando quod hodie Dominus Deus tuus percutit tecum: 13 ut suscitet te sibi in populum, et ipse sit Deus tuus sicut locutus est tibi, et sicut juravit patribus tuis, Abraham, Isaac, et Jacob.
16 ὅτι ὑμεῖς οἴδατε ὡς κατῳκήσαμεν ἐν γῇ Αἰγύπτῳ καὶ παρήλθομεν ἐν μέσῳ τῶν ἐθνῶν οὓς παρήλθετε 17 καὶ εἴδετε τὰ βδελύγματα αὐτῶν καὶ τὰ εἴδωλα αὐτῶν ξύλον καὶ λίθον ἀργύριον καὶ χρυσίον ἅ ἐστιν πα{R'} αὐτοῖς 18 μή τίς ἐστιν ἐν ὑμῖν ἀνὴρ ἢ γυνὴ ἢ πατριὰ ἢ φυλή τίνος ἡ διάνοια ἐξέκλινεν ἀπὸ κυρίου τοῦ θεοῦ ὑμῶν πορεύεσθαι λατρεύειν τοῖς θεοῖς τῶν ἐθνῶν ἐκείνων μή τίς ἐστιν ἐν ὑμῖν ῥίζα ἄνω φύουσα ἐν χολῇ καὶ πικρίᾳ 19 καὶ ἔσται ἐὰν ἀκούσῃ τὰ ῥήματα τῆς ἀρᾶς ταύτης καὶ ἐπιφημίσηται ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ αὐτοῦ λέγων ὅσιά μοι γένοιτο ὅτι ἐν τῇ ἀποπλανήσει τῆς καρδίας μου πορεύσομαι ἵνα μὴ συναπολέσῃ ὁ ἁμαρτωλὸς τὸν ἀναμάρτητον 20 οὐ μὴ θελήσῃ ὁ θεὸς εὐιλατεῦσαι αὐτῷ ἀλ{L'} ἢ τότε ἐκκαυθήσεται ὀργὴ κυρίου καὶ ὁ ζῆλος αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ ἐκείνῳ καὶ κολληθήσονται ἐν αὐτῷ πᾶσαι αἱ ἀραὶ τῆς διαθήκης ταύτης αἱ γεγραμμέναι ἐν τῷ βιβλίῳ τοῦ νόμου τούτου καὶ ἐξαλείψει κύριος τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ ἐκ τῆς ὑπὸ τὸν οὐρανόν 21 καὶ διαστελεῖ αὐτὸν κύριος εἰς κακὰ ἐκ πάντων τῶν υἱῶν Ισραηλ κατὰ πάσας τὰς ἀρὰς τῆς διαθήκης τὰς γεγραμμένας ἐν τῷ βιβλίῳ τοῦ νόμου τούτου 16 Ours is a race, as you know, that has dwelt in Egypt; since then, we have made our way through the midst of many peoples, and as we passed 17 you saw detestable and shameful sights, saw how they worshipped idols of wood and stone, of silver and gold. 18 Pray God there may be no man or woman here, no household or tribe, that is false at heart to the Lord our God, ready to forsake him and serve those other, alien gods. From such a root as that, gall and wormwood must needs spring. 19 Does such a man, listening to the terms of this oath, flatter himself with the thought that all will be well with him, and that he can go on in his perverse ways, till the damp ground imparts its moisture to the dry?[2] 20 Then the Lord will not spare him. The divine anger will burn high in indignation against such a man, and all the curses of which this book makes mention will fall upon him, till the Lord has effaced his memory among living men, 21 singled him out among the whole people of Israel for a miserable end, for every curse that gives this law and covenant its sanction.
22 καὶ ἐροῦσιν ἡ γενεὰ ἡ ἑτέρα οἱ υἱοὶ ὑμῶν οἳ ἀναστήσονται με{Q'} ὑμᾶς καὶ ὁ ἀλλότριος ὃς ἂν ἔλθῃ ἐκ γῆς μακρόθεν καὶ ὄψονται τὰς πληγὰς τῆς γῆς ἐκείνης καὶ τὰς νόσους αὐτῆς ἃς ἀπέστειλεν κύριος ἐ{P'} αὐτήν 23 θεῖον καὶ ἅλα κατακεκαυμένον πᾶσα ἡ γῆ αὐτῆς οὐ σπαρήσεται οὐδὲ ἀνατελεῖ οὐδὲ μὴ ἀναβῇ ἐ{P'} αὐτὴν πᾶν χλωρόν ὥσπερ κατεστράφη Σοδομα καὶ Γομορρα Αδαμα καὶ Σεβωιμ ἃς κατέστρεψεν κύριος ἐν θυμῷ καὶ ὀργῇ 24 καὶ ἐροῦσιν πάντα τὰ ἔθνη διὰ τί ἐποίησεν κύριος οὕτως τῇ γῇ ταύτῃ τίς ὁ θυμὸς τῆς ὀργῆς ὁ μέγας οὗτος 25 καὶ ἐροῦσιν ὅτι κατελίποσαν τὴν διαθήκην κυρίου τοῦ θεοῦ τῶν πατέρων αὐτῶν ἃ διέθετο τοῖς πατράσιν αὐτῶν ὅτε ἐξήγαγεν αὐτοὺς ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου 26 καὶ πορευθέντες ἐλάτρευσαν θεοῖς ἑτέροις καὶ προσεκύνησαν αὐτοῖς οἷς οὐκ ἠπίσταντο οὐδὲ διένειμεν αὐτοῖς 27 καὶ ὠργίσθη θυμῷ κύριος ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν ἐκείνην ἐπαγαγεῖν ἐ{P'} αὐτὴν κατὰ πάσας τὰς κατάρας τὰς γεγραμμένας ἐν τῷ βιβλίῳ τοῦ νόμου τούτου 28 καὶ ἐξῆρεν αὐτοὺς κύριος ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς αὐτῶν ἐν θυμῷ καὶ ὀργῇ καὶ παροξυσμῷ μεγάλῳ σφόδρα καὶ ἐξέβαλεν αὐτοὺς εἰς γῆν ἑτέραν ὡσεὶ νῦν 22 A warning that land will be, which the Lord so visits with plague and affliction; a warning to the next generation, and their children after them, and to strangers who come from far off to see it.[3] 23 Here is a land he has burnt up with brimstone and salty fumes, till it is sown no more and no green thing grows there, overwhelmed as he overwhelmed Sodom and Gomorrha, Adama and Seboim, when his anger raged fierce against them. 24 And all will ask, Why has the Lord treated this land so? What means this anger, this terrible vengeance of his? 25 And the answer will come, It was because they forsook the covenant which the Lord had made with their fathers when he rescued them out of the land of Egypt; 26 because they enslaved themselves to the worship of alien gods unknown to them, gods that were no gods of theirs. 27 That is why the Lord’s vengeance fell heavy on this land, and he brought on them all the curses which the book of his law contained, 28 so hot his anger burned, so fierce his indignation; dispossessing them of their own land and banishing them into a country of strangers, for all to see.
29 τὰ κρυπτὰ κυρίῳ τῷ θεῷ ἡμῶν τὰ δὲ φανερὰ ἡμῖν καὶ τοῖς τέκνοις ἡμῶν εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα ποιεῖν πάντα τὰ ῥήματα τοῦ νόμου τούτου 29 The Lord our God keeps his own secrets; what he will reveal, he has revealed to us, and to our children in perpetuity; ours to live by this law and by all the terms of it. 29 Abscondita, Domino Deo nostro; quæ manifesta sunt, nobis et filiis nostris usque in sempiternum, ut faciamus universa verba legis hujus.
