1 ἐν ἀρχῇ βασιλέως Ιωακιμ υἱοῦ Ιωσια ἐγενήθη ὁ λόγος οὗτος παρὰ κυρίου 2 οὕτως εἶπεν κύριος στῆθι ἐν αὐλῇ οἴκου κυρίου καὶ χρηματιεῖς ἅπασι τοῖς Ιουδαίοις καὶ πᾶσι τοῖς ἐρχομένοις προσκυνεῖν ἐν οἴκῳ κυρίου ἅπαντας τοὺς λόγους οὓς συνέταξά σοι αὐτοῖς χρηματίσαι μὴ ἀφέλῃς ῥῆμα 3 ἴσως ἀκούσονται καὶ ἀποστραφήσονται ἕκαστος ἀπὸ τῆς ὁδοῦ αὐτοῦ τῆς πονηρᾶς καὶ παύσομαι ἀπὸ τῶν κακῶν ὧν ἐγὼ λογίζομαι τοῦ ποιῆσαι αὐτοῖς ἕνεκεν τῶν πονηρῶν ἐπιτηδευμάτων αὐτῶν 4 καὶ ἐρεῖς οὕτως εἶπεν κύριος ἐὰν μὴ ἀκούσητέ μου τοῦ πορεύεσθαι ἐν τοῖς νομίμοις μου οἷς ἔδωκα κατὰ πρόσωπον ὑμῶν 5 εἰσακούειν τῶν λόγων τῶν παίδων μου τῶν προφητῶν οὓς ἐγὼ ἀποστέλλω πρὸς ὑμᾶς ὄρθρου καὶ ἀπέστειλα καὶ οὐκ εἰσηκούσατέ μου 6 καὶ δώσω τὸν οἶκον τοῦτον ὥσπερ Σηλωμ καὶ τὴν πόλιν δώσω εἰς κατάραν πᾶσιν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν πάσης τῆς γῆς 1 At the beginning of Joachim’s reign in Juda, that was son to Josias, word came from the Lord, 2 and this was his bidding: Go and stand in the temple porch, and there, to pilgrims from all the townships of Juda, deliver the message I have entrusted to thee; no word of it do thou retrench. 3 It may be they will listen, and go astray no longer; then I will forgo the punishment I have devised for their ill-doings. 4 This divine warning give them: Listen to me, and live by the law I have enjoined upon you, 5 obeying the call of the prophets, those servants of mine whom I sent early to your doors, upon an errand that went unheeded; 6 or this sanctuary, too, shall be deserted as Silo, and this city shall be an accursed name, all the world over.
7 καὶ ἤκουσαν οἱ ἱερεῖς καὶ οἱ ψευδοπροφῆται καὶ πᾶς ὁ λαὸς τοῦ Ιερεμιου λαλοῦντος τοὺς λόγους τούτους ἐν οἴκῳ κυρίου 8 καὶ ἐγένετο Ιερεμιου παυσαμένου λαλοῦντος πάντα ἃ συνέταξεν αὐτῷ κύριος λαλῆσαι παντὶ τῷ λαῷ καὶ συνελάβοσαν αὐτὸν οἱ ἱερεῖς καὶ οἱ ψευδοπροφῆται καὶ πᾶς ὁ λαὸς λέγων θανάτῳ ἀποθανῇ 9 ὅτι ἐπροφήτευσας τῷ ὀνόματι κυρίου λέγων ὥσπερ Σηλωμ ἔσται ὁ οἶκος οὗτος καὶ ἡ πόλις αὕτη ἐρημωθήσεται ἀπὸ κατοικούντων καὶ ἐξεκκλησιάσθη πᾶς ὁ λαὸς ἐπὶ Ιερεμιαν ἐν οἴκῳ κυρίου 10 καὶ ἤκουσαν οἱ ἄρχοντες Ιουδα τὸν λόγον τοῦτον καὶ ἀνέβησαν ἐξ οἴκου τοῦ βασιλέως εἰς οἶκον κυρίου καὶ ἐκάθισαν ἐν προθύροις πύλης κυρίου τῆς καινῆς 11 καὶ εἶπαν οἱ ἱερεῖς καὶ οἱ ψευδοπροφῆται πρὸς τοὺς ἄρχοντας καὶ παντὶ τῷ λαῷ κρίσις θανάτου τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ τούτῳ ὅτι ἐπροφήτευσεν κατὰ τῆς πόλεως ταύτης καθὼς ἠκούσατε ἐν τοῖς ὠσὶν ὑμῶν 12 καὶ εἶπεν Ιερεμιας πρὸς τοὺς ἄρχοντας καὶ παντὶ τῷ λαῷ λέγων κύριος ἀπέστειλέν με προφητεῦσαι ἐπὶ τὸν οἶκον τοῦτον καὶ ἐπὶ τὴν πόλιν ταύτην πάντας τοὺς λόγους τούτους οὓς ἠκούσατε 13 καὶ νῦν βελτίους ποιήσατε τὰς ὁδοὺς ὑμῶν καὶ τὰ ἔργα ὑμῶν καὶ ἀκούσατε τῆς φωνῆς κυρίου καὶ παύσεται κύριος ἀπὸ τῶν κακῶν ὧν ἐλάλησεν ἐ{F'} ὑμᾶς 14 καὶ ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἐν χερσὶν ὑμῶν ποιήσατέ μοι ὡς συμφέρει καὶ ὡς βέλτιον ὑμῖν 15 ἀλ{L'} ἢ γνόντες γνώσεσθε ὅτι εἰ ἀναιρεῖτέ με αἷμα ἀθῷον δίδοτε ἐ{F'} ὑμᾶς καὶ ἐπὶ τὴν πόλιν ταύτην καὶ ἐπὶ τοὺς κατοικοῦντας ἐν αὐτῇ ὅτι ἐν ἀληθείᾳ ἀπέσταλκέν με κύριος πρὸς ὑμᾶς λαλῆσαι εἰς τὰ ὦτα ὑμῶν πάντας τοὺς λόγους τούτους 7 Priests and prophets and townsfolk heard it alike, this utterance of Jeremias in the temple; 8 and when he had thus done the Lord’s errand for all the people to hear, priests and prophets and townsfolk laid hands upon him, crying out, His life must pay for it! 9 What, would he threaten in the Lord’s name that this temple is to share Silo’s doom, this city to be left forlorn, uninhabited? There, in the Lord’s house, Jeremias must confront the anger of a whole people. 10 When they heard of it, the nobles of Juda left palace for temple, and there held assize, at the approaches of the New Gate. 11 Before these, and before the general assembly, priest and prophet called for the death penalty; here was a man who had foretold, in the public hearing, calamity for Jerusalem. 12 To nobles and to people Jeremias had but one defence: Nothing have I said against temple or city but what the Lord’s errand bade me. 13 Come, do but amend your lives and your likings, and listen to the Lord your God; he will spare you the doom he has pronounced upon you. 14 As for me, I am in your hands; do with me what you will, what you think right. 15 Only be sure of this, if you kill me, you will bring the guilt of murder on yourselves, your city, and all that dwell there; no word you have heard from me but has the Lord’s true warrant.
16 καὶ εἶπαν οἱ ἄρχοντες καὶ πᾶς ὁ λαὸς πρὸς τοὺς ἱερεῖς καὶ πρὸς τοὺς ψευδοπροφήτας οὐκ ἔστιν τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ τούτῳ κρίσις θανάτου ὅτι ἐπὶ τῷ ὀνόματι κυρίου τοῦ θεοῦ ἡμῶν ἐλάλησεν πρὸς ἡμᾶς 17 καὶ ἀνέστησαν ἄνδρες τῶν πρεσβυτέρων τῆς γῆς καὶ εἶπαν πάσῃ τῇ συναγωγῇ τοῦ λαοῦ 18 Μιχαιας ὁ Μωραθίτης ἦν ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις Εζεκιου βασιλέως Ιουδα καὶ εἶπεν παντὶ τῷ λαῷ Ιουδα οὕτως εἶπεν κύριος Σιων ὡς ἀγρὸς ἀροτριαθήσεται καὶ Ιερουσαλημ εἰς ἄβατον ἔσται καὶ τὸ ὄρος τοῦ οἴκου εἰς ἄλσος δρυμοῦ 19 μὴ ἀνελὼν ἀνεῖλεν αὐτὸν Εζεκιας καὶ πᾶς Ιουδα οὐχὶ ὅτι ἐφοβήθησαν τὸν κύριον καὶ ὅτι ἐδεήθησαν τοῦ προσώπου κυρίου καὶ ἐπαύσατο κύριος ἀπὸ τῶν κακῶν ὧν ἐλάλησεν ἐ{P'} αὐτούς καὶ ἡμεῖς ἐποιήσαμεν κακὰ μεγάλα ἐπὶ ψυχὰς ἡμῶν 16 And this answer both nobles and townsfolk made to priest and prophet, There is no death sentence lies against this man; as the spokesman of the Lord our God he has given us his message. 17 There were some of the older citizens that rose to defend him publicly; 18 Remember the prophet Michaeas of Morasthi, they said, in the days of king Ezechias, who told the people of Juda: Sion shall be no better than a ploughed field, says the Lord of hosts, Jerusalem but a heap of stones, the temple height only a hanging wood.[1] 19 Did Ezechias king of Juda, or his subjects, thereupon put him to death? Nay, they feared the Lord too well for that; went about to appease his anger, so that he spared them the punishment he had threatened. It were pity of our lives, did we so great a wrong!

Sion quasi ager arabitur,
20 καὶ ἄνθρωπος ἦν προφητεύων τῷ ὀνόματι κυρίου Ουριας υἱὸς Σαμαιου ἐκ Καριαθιαριμ καὶ ἐπροφήτευσεν περὶ τῆς γῆς ταύτης κατὰ πάντας τοὺς λόγους Ιερεμιου 21 καὶ ἤκουσεν ὁ βασιλεὺς Ιωακιμ καὶ πάντες οἱ ἄρχοντες πάντας τοὺς λόγους αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐζήτουν ἀποκτεῖναι αὐτόν καὶ ἤκουσεν Ουριας καὶ εἰσῆλθεν εἰς Αἴγυπτον 22 καὶ ἐξαπέστειλεν ὁ βασιλεὺς ἄνδρας εἰς Αἴγυπτον 23 καὶ ἐξηγάγοσαν αὐτὸν ἐκεῖθεν καὶ εἰσηγάγοσαν αὐτὸν πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα καὶ ἐπάταξεν αὐτὸν ἐν μαχαίρᾳ καὶ ἔρριψεν αὐτὸν εἰς τὸ μνῆμα υἱῶν λαοῦ αὐτοῦ 24 πλὴν χεὶρ Αχικαμ υἱοῦ Σαφαν ἦν μετὰ Ιερεμιου τοῦ μὴ παραδοῦναι αὐτὸν εἰς χεῖρας τοῦ λαοῦ τοῦ μὴ ἀνελεῖν αὐτόν 20 Another prophet there was that came in the Lord’s name, Urias, the son of Semei, a man of Cariathiarim, and used no gentler language about this city and country than Jeremias himself. 21 King Joachim, and all his chieftains and his nobles, were for making away with him when they heard such warnings; and though he took alarm at the rumour of it and fled to Egypt, 22 royal pursuivants were sent there under Elnathan, son of Achobor, to bring him back; 23 whereupon king Joachim put him to the sword, and cast his body away among the tombs of the common folk. 24 But Jeremias had a friend in Ahicam, the son of Saphan, who would not let him be handed over to the people and put to death.
