1 καὶ ἐλάλησεν κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν μετὰ τὸ τελευτῆσαι τοὺς δύο υἱοὺς Ααρων ἐν τῷ προσάγειν αὐτοὺς πῦρ ἀλλότριον ἔναντι κυρίου καὶ ἐτελεύτησαν 2 καὶ εἶπεν κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν λάλησον πρὸς Ααρων τὸν ἀδελφόν σου καὶ μὴ εἰσπορευέσθω πᾶσαν ὥραν εἰς τὸ ἅγιον ἐσώτερον τοῦ καταπετάσματος εἰς πρόσωπον τοῦ ἱλαστηρίου ὅ ἐστιν ἐπὶ τῆς κιβωτοῦ τοῦ μαρτυρίου καὶ οὐκ ἀποθανεῖται ἐν γὰρ νεφέλῃ ὀφθήσομαι ἐπὶ τοῦ ἱλαστηρίου 3 οὕτως εἰσελεύσεται Ααρων εἰς τὸ ἅγιον ἐν μόσχῳ ἐκ βοῶν περὶ ἁμαρτίας καὶ κριὸν εἰς ὁλοκαύτωμα 4 καὶ χιτῶνα λινοῦν ἡγιασμένον ἐνδύσεται καὶ περισκελὲς λινοῦν ἔσται ἐπὶ τοῦ χρωτὸς αὐτοῦ καὶ ζώνῃ λινῇ ζώσεται καὶ κίδαριν λινῆν περιθήσεται ἱμάτια ἅγιά ἐστιν καὶ λούσεται ὕδατι πᾶν τὸ σῶμα αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐνδύσεται αὐτά 5 καὶ παρὰ τῆς συναγωγῆς τῶν υἱῶν Ισραηλ λήμψεται δύο χιμάρους ἐξ αἰγῶν περὶ ἁμαρτίας καὶ κριὸν ἕνα εἰς ὁλοκαύτωμα 1 After the death of Aaron’s two sons, that were punished for offering up unhallowed fire, the Lord spoke to Moses 2 giving him a message for his brother Aaron: He must never present himself without due preparation within the sanctuary, behind the veil, where the throne stands above the ark. If he does so, the penalty is death; it is over this shrine that I mean to reveal myself in cloud. 3 And this is the preparation he must make; he must offer a young bullock as a victim for his faults, and a ram by way of burnt-sacrifice. 4 He must be clad in the linen robe, with linen breeches for decency, and must be girt with a linen girdle, and wear the linen mitre on his head; these are the sacred vestments he must put on, after washing himself. 5 And the whole people of Israel must provide him with two goats as victims for their faults, and a ram for burnt-sacrifice.
7 The two goats he will present before the Lord, at the door of the tabernacle that bears record of me, 8 and will cast lots between them; one is to be the Lord’s due, the other is for discharge.[1] 9 The one chosen by lot to be the Lord’s due must be offered for their faults; 10 the one chosen for their discharge must be presented before the Lord alive, to let intercession fall upon it, and then be turned loose in the desert. 6 Cumque obtulerit vitulum, et oraverit pro se et pro domo sua, 7 duos hircos stare faciet coram Domino in ostio tabernaculi testimonii: 8 mittensque super utrumque sortem, unam Domino, alteram capro emissario: 9 cujus exierit sors Domino, offeret illum pro peccato: 10 cujus autem in caprum emissarium, statuet eum vivum coram Domino, ut fundat preces super eo, et emittat eum in solitudinem.
11 καὶ προσάξει Ααρων τὸν μόσχον τὸν περὶ τῆς ἁμαρτίας τὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ τοῦ οἴκου αὐτοῦ μόνον καὶ ἐξιλάσεται περὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ τοῦ οἴκου αὐτοῦ καὶ σφάξει τὸν μόσχον τὸν περὶ τῆς ἁμαρτίας τὸν αὐτοῦ 12 καὶ λήμψεται τὸ πυρεῖον πλῆρες ἀνθράκων πυρὸς ἀπὸ τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου τοῦ ἀπέναντι κυρίου καὶ πλήσει τὰς χεῖρας θυμιάματος συνθέσεως λεπτῆς καὶ εἰσοίσει ἐσώτερον τοῦ καταπετάσματος 13 καὶ ἐπιθήσει τὸ θυμίαμα ἐπὶ τὸ πῦρ ἔναντι κυρίου καὶ καλύψει ἡ ἀτμὶς τοῦ θυμιάματος τὸ ἱλαστήριον τὸ ἐπὶ τῶν μαρτυρίων καὶ οὐκ ἀποθανεῖται 14 καὶ λήμψεται ἀπὸ τοῦ αἵματος τοῦ μόσχου καὶ ῥανεῖ τῷ δακτύλῳ ἐπὶ τὸ ἱλαστήριον κατὰ ἀνατολάς κατὰ πρόσωπον τοῦ ἱλαστηρίου ῥανεῖ ἑπτάκις ἀπὸ τοῦ αἵματος τῷ δακτύλῳ 15 καὶ σφάξει τὸν χίμαρον τὸν περὶ τῆς ἁμαρτίας τὸν περὶ τοῦ λαοῦ ἔναντι κυρίου καὶ εἰσοίσει ἀπὸ τοῦ αἵματος αὐτοῦ ἐσώτερον τοῦ καταπετάσματος καὶ ποιήσει τὸ αἷμα αὐτοῦ ὃν τρόπον ἐποίησεν τὸ αἷμα τοῦ μόσχου καὶ ῥανεῖ τὸ αἷμα αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τὸ ἱλαστήριον κατὰ πρόσωπον τοῦ ἱλαστηρίου 16 καὶ ἐξιλάσεται τὸ ἅγιον ἀπὸ τῶν ἀκαθαρσιῶν τῶν υἱῶν Ισραηλ καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν ἀδικημάτων αὐτῶν περὶ πασῶν τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν αὐτῶν καὶ οὕτω ποιήσει τῇ σκηνῇ τοῦ μαρτυρίου τῇ ἐκτισμένῃ ἐν αὐτοῖς ἐν μέσῳ τῆς ἀκαθαρσίας αὐτῶν 11 So, with due ceremony, he will offer the bullock, making intercession for himself and his family, and immolate it. 12 And now, filling his censer with coals from the altar, and taking a handful of beaten spices for incense, he will pass beyond the veil into the inner sanctuary, 13 putting incense on the coals, so that a cloud of smoke may hide that shrine over the ark, which none may see and live. 14 He will take some of the bullock’s blood, too, and sprinkle it with his finger seven times over the eastern end of the sanctuary, opposite the throne.[2] 15 And afterwards, when he has immolated the goat for the faults of the people, he will carry some of its blood, too, within the veil, and sprinkle it there opposite the shrine, like the bullock’s blood. 16 So he will purify the sanctuary from all the faults the sons of Israel have committed, their transgressions and their uncleanness. With the same ceremony he shall purify the tabernacle that bears the Lord’s record, pitched there amongst them, with all the defilement of their dwellings round about.
17 καὶ πᾶς ἄνθρωπος οὐκ ἔσται ἐν τῇ σκηνῇ τοῦ μαρτυρίου εἰσπορευομένου αὐτοῦ ἐξιλάσασθαι ἐν τῷ ἁγίῳ ἕως ἂν ἐξέλθῃ καὶ ἐξιλάσεται περὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ τοῦ οἴκου αὐτοῦ καὶ περὶ πάσης συναγωγῆς υἱῶν Ισραηλ 18 καὶ ἐξελεύσεται ἐπὶ τὸ θυσιαστήριον τὸ ὂν ἀπέναντι κυρίου καὶ ἐξιλάσεται ἐ{P'} αὐτοῦ καὶ λήμψεται ἀπὸ τοῦ αἵματος τοῦ μόσχου καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ αἵματος τοῦ χιμάρου καὶ ἐπιθήσει ἐπὶ τὰ κέρατα τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου κύκλῳ 19 καὶ ῥανεῖ ἐ{P'} αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ τοῦ αἵματος τῷ δακτύλῳ ἑπτάκις καὶ καθαριεῖ αὐτὸ καὶ ἁγιάσει αὐτὸ ἀπὸ τῶν ἀκαθαρσιῶν τῶν υἱῶν Ισραηλ 17 No one must be there in the tabernacle from the time when the high priest enters the inner sanctuary, to make intercession for himself and his family and the whole people of Israel, till the time when he comes out again. 18 And when he comes out to the altar that stands there in the Lord’s presence, he must make intercession for himself, pouring the blood of bullock and goat all round the horns of it; 19 and so, sprinkling it with his finger seven times, he must make expiation, and cleanse it from all the defilement incurred by the sons of Israel.
20 καὶ συντελέσει ἐξιλασκόμενος τὸ ἅγιον καὶ τὴν σκηνὴν τοῦ μαρτυρίου καὶ τὸ θυσιαστήριον καὶ περὶ τῶν ἱερέων καθαριεῖ καὶ προσάξει τὸν χίμαρον τὸν ζῶντα 21 καὶ ἐπιθήσει Ααρων τὰς χεῖρας αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τὴν κεφαλὴν τοῦ χιμάρου τοῦ ζῶντος καὶ ἐξαγορεύσει ἐ{P'} αὐτοῦ πάσας τὰς ἀνομίας τῶν υἱῶν Ισραηλ καὶ πάσας τὰς ἀδικίας αὐτῶν καὶ πάσας τὰς ἁμαρτίας αὐτῶν καὶ ἐπιθήσει αὐτὰς ἐπὶ τὴν κεφαλὴν τοῦ χιμάρου τοῦ ζῶντος καὶ ἐξαποστελεῖ ἐν χειρὶ ἀνθρώπου ἑτοίμου εἰς τὴν ἔρημον 22 καὶ λήμψεται ὁ χίμαρος ἐ{F'} ἑαυτῷ τὰς ἀδικίας αὐτῶν εἰς γῆν ἄβατον καὶ ἐξαποστελεῖ τὸν χίμαρον εἰς τὴν ἔρημον 20 Sanctuary, and tabernacle, and altar so cleansed, he has still to offer up the goat that is left alive. 21 He must put both hands on its head, confessing all the sins and transgressions and faults Israel has committed, and laying the guilt of them on its head. And there will be a man standing ready to take it into the desert for him; 22 so the goat will carry away all their sins into a land uninhabited, set at large in the desert.
23 καὶ εἰσελεύσεται Ααρων εἰς τὴν σκηνὴν τοῦ μαρτυρίου καὶ ἐκδύσεται τὴν στολὴν τὴν λινῆν ἣν ἐνεδεδύκει εἰσπορευομένου αὐτοῦ εἰς τὸ ἅγιον καὶ ἀποθήσει αὐτὴν ἐκεῖ 24 καὶ λούσεται τὸ σῶμα αὐτοῦ ὕδατι ἐν τόπῳ ἁγίῳ καὶ ἐνδύσεται τὴν στολὴν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐξελθὼν ποιήσει τὸ ὁλοκάρπωμα αὐτοῦ καὶ τὸ ὁλοκάρπωμα τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ ἐξιλάσεται περὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ περὶ τοῦ οἴκου αὐτοῦ καὶ περὶ τοῦ λαοῦ ὡς περὶ τῶν ἱερέων 25 καὶ τὸ στέαρ τὸ περὶ τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν ἀνοίσει ἐπὶ τὸ θυσιαστήριον 26 καὶ ὁ ἐξαποστέλλων τὸν χίμαρον τὸν διεσταλμένον εἰς ἄφεσιν πλυνεῖ τὰ ἱμάτια καὶ λούσεται τὸ σῶμα αὐτοῦ ὕδατι καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα εἰσελεύσεται εἰς τὴν παρεμβολήν 27 καὶ τὸν μόσχον τὸν περὶ τῆς ἁμαρτίας καὶ τὸν χίμαρον τὸν περὶ τῆς ἁμαρτίας ὧν τὸ αἷμα εἰσηνέχθη ἐξιλάσασθαι ἐν τῷ ἁγίῳ ἐξοίσουσιν αὐτὰ ἔξω τῆς παρεμβολῆς καὶ κατακαύσουσιν αὐτὰ ἐν πυρί καὶ τὰ δέρματα αὐτῶν καὶ τὰ κρέα αὐτῶν καὶ τὴν κόπρον αὐτῶν 28 ὁ δὲ κατακαίων αὐτὰ πλυνεῖ τὰ ἱμάτια καὶ λούσεται τὸ σῶμα αὐτοῦ ὕδατι καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα εἰσελεύσεται εἰς τὴν παρεμβολήν 23 Then Aaron will come back to the tabernacle, and take off the vestments he wore when he entered the sanctuary, and leave them there; 24 he will wash on holy ground, and put on his own garments instead. He will come out, and offer his own burnt-sacrifice, and that of the people, making intercession for himself and for the people both at once, 25 and burn the fat of the transgression-victim on the altar. 26 The man who let loose the goat that was discharged must wash his clothes and bathe before he returns to the camp. 27 As for the transgression-victims, the bullock and the goat, whose blood was carried into the sanctuary to make expiation there, the carcases must be taken away from the camp and destroyed by fire, skin and flesh and dung together. 28 And the man who burns them, before he returns to the camp, must wash his clothes and bathe like the other.
On the tenth day of the seventh month you will keep a fast;[3] no work is to be done by citizen or by alien that day. 30 It is a day of atonement on your behalf, to cleanse you from all fault, and make you clean in the Lord’s sight; 31 it must be all repose; so that you can observe the fast, year after year. 32 He who then holds the office of high priest, duly anointed to serve in place of his father, will make atonement, clad in linen robe and sacred vestments; 33 purify sanctuary, tabernacle, altar, priests and people. 34 You will continue for all time to make intercession, once a year, for the children of Israel, and for all the faults they have committed.

And Aaron carried out the commands which the Lord had given to Moses.
