Knox Bible Ad

1 ἀφανισθήσεται Σαμάρεια ὅτι ἀντέστη πρὸς τὸν θεὸν αὐτῆς ἐν ῥομφαίᾳ πεσοῦνται αὐτοί καὶ τὰ ὑποτίτθια αὐτῶν ἐδαφισθήσονται καὶ αἱ ἐν γαστρὶ ἔχουσαι αὐτῶν διαρραγήσονται 1 Death to Samaria, that has provoked her God’s anger! Death at the sword’s point; children dashed headlong, ripped open the womb! 1

Pereat Samaria, quoniam ad amaritudinem concitavit Deum suum!
in gladio pereant,
parvuli eorum elidantur,
et fœtæ ejus discindantur!
2 ἐπιστράφητι Ισραηλ πρὸς κύριον τὸν θεόν σου διότι ἠσθένησας ἐν ταῖς ἀδικίαις σου 3 λάβετε με{Q'} ἑαυτῶν λόγους καὶ ἐπιστράφητε πρὸς κύριον τὸν θεὸν ὑμῶν εἴπατε αὐτῷ ὅπως μὴ λάβητε ἀδικίαν καὶ λάβητε ἀγαθά καὶ ἀνταποδώσομεν καρπὸν χειλέων ἡμῶν 4 Ασσουρ οὐ μὴ σώσῃ ἡμᾶς ἐ{F'} ἵππον οὐκ ἀναβησόμεθα οὐκέτι μὴ εἴπωμεν θεοὶ ἡμῶν τοῖς ἔργοις τῶν χειρῶν ἡμῶν ὁ ἐν σοὶ ἐλεήσει ὀρφανόν 2 Come back, Israel, to the Lord thy God; it is sin that has caused thy overthrow. 3 Come back, men of Israel, with a plea ready on your lips: Pardon all our guilt, and take the best we have in return;[1] the praises we utter shall be our victims now. 4 No longer we will find refuge in Assyrian help, mount our men on horses from Egypt;[2] no longer will we give the name of gods to the things our own hands have made; thou art the friend of the friendless who trust in thee. 2

Convertere, Israël, ad Dominum Deum tuum,
quoniam corruisti in iniquitate tua.
3
Tollite vobiscum verba,
et convertimini ad Dominum; et dicite ei:
Omnem aufer iniquitatem, accipe bonum,
et reddemus vitulos labiorum nostrorum.
4
Assur non salvabit nos:
super equum non ascendemus,
nec dicemus ultra, Dii nostri opera manuum nostrarum:
quia ejus, qui in te est, misereberis pupilli.
5 ἰάσομαι τὰς κατοικίας αὐτῶν ἀγαπήσω αὐτοὺς ὁμολόγως ὅτι ἀπέστρεψεν ἡ ὀργή μου ἀ{P'} αὐτῶν 6 ἔσομαι ὡς δρόσος τῷ Ισραηλ ἀνθήσει ὡς κρίνον καὶ βαλεῖ τὰς ῥίζας αὐτοῦ ὡς ὁ Λίβανος 7 πορεύσονται οἱ κλάδοι αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔσται ὡς ἐλαία κατάκαρπος καὶ ἡ ὀσφρασία αὐτοῦ ὡς Λιβάνου 8 ἐπιστρέψουσιν καὶ καθιοῦνται ὑπὸ τὴν σκέπην αὐτοῦ ζήσονται καὶ μεθυσθήσονται σίτῳ καὶ ἐξανθήσει ὡς ἄμπελος τὸ μνημόσυνον αὐτοῦ ὡς οἶνος Λιβάνου 9 τῷ Εφραιμ τί αὐτῷ ἔτι καὶ εἰδώλοις ἐγὼ ἐταπείνωσα αὐτόν καὶ ἐγὼ κατισχύσω αὐτόν ἐγὼ ὡς ἄρκευθος πυκάζουσα ἐξ ἐμοῦ ὁ καρπός σου εὕρηται 10 τίς σοφὸς καὶ συνήσει ταῦτα ἢ συνετὸς καὶ ἐπιγνώσεται αὐτά διότι εὐθεῖαι αἱ ὁδοὶ τοῦ κυρίου καὶ δίκαιοι πορεύσονται ἐν αὐταῖς οἱ δὲ ἀσεβεῖς ἀσθενήσουσιν ἐν αὐταῖς 5 I will bring healing to their crushed spirits;[3] in free mercy I will give them back my love; my vengeance has passed them by. 6 I will be morning dew, to make Israel grow as the lilies grow, strike roots deep as the forest of Lebanon. 7 Those branches shall spread, it shall become fair as the olive, fragrant as Lebanon cedar. 8 None that dwells under the protection of that name but shall come back to me; corn shall be theirs in plenty, and they will grow like one of their own vineyards, famed as the vintage of Lebanon itself. 9 The false gods of Ephraim are forgotten; mine to answer his prayer and tend him, ever-green as a fir-tree; from me all thy increase comes. 10 All this the wise discern, the thoughtful understand; straight paths the Lord has shewn us for his friends to walk in; who leaves them shall stumble to his ruin. 5
Sanabo contritiones eorum;
diligam eos spontanee:
quia aversus est furor meus ab eis.
6
Ero quasi ros;
Israël germinabit sicut lilium,
et erumpet radix ejus ut Libani.
7
Ibunt rami ejus,
et erit quasi oliva gloria ejus,
et odor ejus ut Libani.
8
Convertentur sedentes in umbra ejus;
vivent tritico, et germinabunt quasi vinea;
memoriale ejus sicut vinum Libani.
9
Ephraim, quid mihi ultra idola?
Ego exaudiam, et dirigam eum ego ut abietem virentem;
ex me fructus tuus inventus est.
10
Quis sapiens, et intelliget ista? intelligens, et sciet hæc?
quia rectæ viæ Domini,
et justi ambulabunt in eis;
prævaricatores vero corruent in eis.
