| 1 ἔκδυσαι Ιερουσαλημ τὴν στολὴν τοῦ πένθους καὶ τῆς κακώσεώς σου καὶ ἔνδυσαι τὴν εὐπρέπειαν τῆς παρὰ τοῦ θεοῦ δόξης εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα 2 περιβαλοῦ τὴν διπλοΐδα τῆς παρὰ τοῦ θεοῦ δικαιοσύνης ἐπίθου τὴν μίτραν ἐπὶ τὴν κεφαλήν σου τῆς δόξης τοῦ αἰωνίου 3 ὁ γὰρ θεὸς δείξει τῇ ὑ{P'} οὐρανὸν πάσῃ τὴν σὴν λαμπρότητα 4 κληθήσεται γάρ σου τὸ ὄνομα παρὰ τοῦ θεοῦ εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα εἰρήνη δικαιοσύνης καὶ δόξα θεοσεβείας 5 ἀνάστηθι Ιερουσαλημ καὶ στῆθι ἐπὶ τοῦ ὑψηλοῦ καὶ περίβλεψαι πρὸς ἀνατολὰς καὶ ἰδέ σου συνηγμένα τὰ τέκνα ἀπὸ ἡλίου δυσμῶν ἕως ἀνατολῶν τῷ ῥήματι τοῦ ἁγίου χαίροντας τῇ τοῦ θεοῦ μνείᾳ 6 ἐξῆλθον γὰρ παρὰ σοῦ πεζοὶ ἀγόμενοι ὑπὸ ἐχθρῶν εἰσάγει δὲ αὐτοὺς ὁ θεὸς πρὸς σὲ αἰρομένους μετὰ δόξης ὡς θρόνον βασιλείας 7 συνέταξεν γὰρ ὁ θεὸς ταπεινοῦσθαι πᾶν ὄρος ὑψηλὸν καὶ θῖνας ἀενάους καὶ φάραγγας πληροῦσθαι εἰς ὁμαλισμὸν τῆς γῆς ἵνα βαδίσῃ Ισραηλ ἀσφαλῶς τῇ τοῦ θεοῦ δόξῃ 8 ἐσκίασαν δὲ καὶ οἱ δρυμοὶ καὶ πᾶν ξύλον εὐωδίας τῷ Ισραηλ προστάγματι τοῦ θεοῦ 9 ἡγήσεται γὰρ ὁ θεὸς Ισραηλ με{T'} εὐφροσύνης τῷ φωτὶ τῆς δόξης αὐτοῦ σὺν ἐλεημοσύνῃ καὶ δικαιοσύνῃ τῇ πα{R'} αὐτοῦ | 1 Enough, Jerusalem; lay aside now the sad garb of thy humiliation, and put on bright robes, befitting the eternal glory God means for thee; 2 cloak of divine protection[1] thrown about thee, thy temples bearing a diadem of renown. 3 In thee God will manifest the splendour of his presence, for the whole world to see; 4 and the name by which he will call thee for ever is, Loyalty rewarded, Piety crowned.[2] 5 Up, Jerusalem, to the heights! Look to the sun’s rising, and see if thy sons be not coming to thee, gathered from east to west, joyfully acknowledging God’s holy will! 6 Afoot they were led off by the enemy; it is the Lord that shall lead them home, borne aloft like royal princes. 7 He will have the ground made level; high mountain must stoop, and immemorial hill, and the valleys be filled up, for Israel’s safe passage and God’s glory; 8 spinneys of every scented tree shall grow, by his divine command, to give Israel shade. 9 So merciful he is, and so faithful! In great content, their journey lit by the majesty of his presence, Israel shall come home. | 1 Exue te, Jerusalem, stola luctus et vexationis tuæ, et indue te decore, et honore ejus, quæ a Deo tibi est, sempiternæ gloriæ. Circumdabit te Deus diploide justitiæ, et imponet mitram capiti honoris æterni. Deus enim ostendet splendorem suum in te, omni qui sub cælo est. Nominabitur enim tibi nomen tuum a Deo in sempiternum: pax justitiæ, et honor pietatis. Exsurge, Jerusalem, et sta in excelso: et circumspice ad orientem, et vide collectos filios tuos ab oriente sole usque ad occidentem, in verbo Sancti, gaudentes Dei memoria. Exierunt enim abs te pedibus ducti ab inimicis: adducet autem illos Dominus ad te portatos in honore sicut filios regni: constituit enim Deus humiliare omnem montem excelsum et rupes perennes, et convalles replere in æqualitatem terræ, ut ambulet Israël diligenter in honorem Dei. Obumbraverunt autem et silvæ, et omne lignum suavitatis Israël ex mandato Dei. Adducet enim Deus Israël cum jucunditate in lumine majestatis suæ, cum misericordia et justitia quæ est ex ipso. |
[1] ‘Divine protection’; literally ‘justice’, that is, a renewal of the covenant between Israel and their God, with the obligations of it fulfilled on either side.
