1 ὡς δὲ ἤκουσεν Ιαβιν βασιλεὺς Ασωρ ἀπέστειλεν πρὸς Ιωβαβ βασιλέα Μαρρων καὶ πρὸς βασιλέα Συμοων καὶ πρὸς βασιλέα Αζιφ 2 καὶ πρὸς τοὺς βασιλεῖς τοὺς κατὰ Σιδῶνα τὴν μεγάλην εἰς τὴν ὀρεινὴν καὶ εἰς τὴν Ραβα ἀπέναντι Κενερωθ καὶ εἰς τὸ πεδίον καὶ εἰς Ναφεδδωρ 3 καὶ εἰς τοὺς παραλίους Χαναναίους ἀπὸ ἀνατολῶν καὶ εἰς τοὺς παραλίους Αμορραίους καὶ Ευαίους καὶ Ιεβουσαίους καὶ Φερεζαίους τοὺς ἐν τῷ ὄρει καὶ τοὺς Χετταίους τοὺς ὑπὸ τὴν Αερμων εἰς γῆν Μασσηφα 4 καὶ ἐξῆλθον αὐτοὶ καὶ οἱ βασιλεῖς αὐτῶν με{T'} αὐτῶν ὥσπερ ἡ ἄμμος τῆς θαλάσσης τῷ πλήθει καὶ ἵπποι καὶ ἅρματα πολλὰ σφόδρα 5 καὶ συνῆλθον πάντες οἱ βασιλεῖς οὗτοι καὶ παρεγένοντο ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτὸ καὶ παρενέβαλον ἐπὶ τοῦ ὕδατος Μαρρων πολεμῆσαι τὸν Ισραηλ | 1 At the news of all this, a summons went out from Jabin, king of Asor, to the king of Madon, Jobab, and the kings of Semeron and Achsaph, 2 and all the kings of the north country, on the heights, and in the valley south of Ceneroth, in the plains, too, and the territories of Dor by the sea coast. 3 Chanaanites from east and west, Amorrhites and Hethites and Pherezites and Jebusites from the hills, Hevites from the land of Maspha, close to the spurs of Hermon, 4 all alike went out to battle with their armies, an array of men countless as is the sand by the sea shore, with horses too and chariots beyond all reckoning. 5 The meeting-place for all these kings in their march against Israel was at the waters of Merom.
Then thou wilt be able to hamstring those horses of theirs, give those chariots to the flames. 7 So Josue with all his army made a sudden march to the waters of Merom, and there fell upon them; 8 and the Lord gave Israel the mastery, so that they defeated the enemy and pursued them all the way to the famous town of Sidon, and the waters of Maserephoth, and eastwards to Masphe. So hard did Josue press them that none were left surviving; 9 and then he did as the Lord had bidden him, hamstringing their horses and setting fire to their chariots. 10 Then he turned back to Asor, which in old days was paramount among all these kingdoms; he put Jabin to the sword, 11 and destroyed every living thing that dwelt there; no trace of them was left, all must be exterminated, and the city itself burned down. 12 He conquered, too, the capitals of all the neighbouring kings, and destroyed them, as Moses, the Lord’s servant, had bidden him, 13 except those which stood among the mountains, or on steep hills;[1] Asor itself was the only well-defended city the Israelites burned down. 14 The spoil and the cattle belonging to these cities they divided among themselves, but left no human creature alive. 15 The Lord’s bidding to Josue through Moses was carried out in full; no word of what the Lord had enjoined on Moses but Josue obeyed it. |
16 καὶ ἔλαβεν Ἰησοῦς πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν τὴν ὀρεινὴν καὶ πᾶσαν τὴν Ναγεβ καὶ πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν Γοσομ καὶ τὴν πεδινὴν καὶ τὴν πρὸς δυσμαῖς καὶ τὸ ὄρος Ισραηλ καὶ τὰ ταπεινά 17 τὰ πρὸς τῷ ὄρει ἀπὸ ὄρους Αχελ καὶ ὃ προσαναβαίνει εἰς Σηιρ καὶ ἕως Βααλγαδ καὶ τὰ πεδία τοῦ Λιβάνου ὑπὸ τὸ ὄρος τὸ Αερμων καὶ πάντας τοὺς βασιλεῖς αὐτῶν ἔλαβεν καὶ ἀνεῖλεν αὐτοὺς καὶ ἀπέκτεινεν 18 καὶ πλείους ἡμέρας ἐποίησεν Ἰησοῦς πρὸς τοὺς βασιλεῖς τούτους τὸν πόλεμον 19 καὶ οὐκ ἦν πόλις ἣν οὐκ ἔλαβεν Ισραηλ πάντα ἐλάβοσαν ἐν πολέμῳ 20 ὅτι διὰ κυρίου ἐγένετο κατισχῦσαι αὐτῶν τὴν καρδίαν συναντᾶν εἰς πόλεμον πρὸς Ισραηλ ἵνα ἐξολεθρευθῶσιν ὅπως μὴ δοθῇ αὐτοῖς ἔλεος ἀλ{L'} ἵνα ἐξολεθρευθῶσιν ὃν τρόπον εἶπεν κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν | 16 It was Josue that conquered all the hill-country and the land south of it, the Gosen country and the low valleys, and the region west of them, the hill-country of Israel,[2] too, and the plain before it. 17 These conquests of his extended from the slopes of the Edomite hills right up to Baalgad, on the Lebanon plain under mount Hermon; the kings, everywhere, were captured, and crushed, and slain. 18 Long time must Josue spend campaigning against them; 19 there was no city that surrendered to the Israelites, except the Hevite city of Gabaon, all the rest were reduced by force of arms. 20 For indeed the Lord’s purpose was that they should be stubborn-hearted, and be defeated by Israel in battle, with no claim to mercy; so that all might be destroyed, in pursuance of the command the Lord gave to Moses. |
21 καὶ ἦλθεν Ἰησοῦς ἐν τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ καὶ ἐξωλέθρευσεν τοὺς Ενακιμ ἐκ τῆς ὀρεινῆς ἐκ Χεβρων καὶ ἐκ Δαβιρ καὶ ἐξ Αναβωθ καὶ ἐκ παντὸς γένους Ισραηλ καὶ ἐκ παντὸς ὄρους Ιουδα σὺν ταῖς πόλεσιν αὐτῶν καὶ ἐξωλέθρευσεν αὐτοὺς Ἰησοῦς 22 οὐ κατελείφθη τῶν Ενακιμ ἀπὸ τῶν υἱῶν Ισραηλ ἀλλὰ πλὴν ἐν Γάζῃ καὶ ἐν Γεθ καὶ ἐν Ασεδωθ κατελείφθη 23 καὶ ἔλαβεν Ἰησοῦς πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν καθότι ἐνετείλατο κύριος τῷ Μωυσῇ καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτοὺς Ἰησοῦς ἐν κληρονομίᾳ Ισραηλ ἐν μερισμῷ κατὰ φυλὰς αὐτῶν καὶ ἡ γῆ κατέπαυσεν πολεμουμένη | 21 At this time, too, Josue made his way up into the mountain country, Hebron, Dabir, Anab, and all the mountain country both of Juda and Israel, to make an end of the Enacim and their cities. 22 He left no trace of the breed of Enac in Israelite territory; they survived only at Gaza, Geth and Azotus. 23 Thus, in fulfilment of the Lord’s promise to Moses, Josue occupied the whole country, and gave the several tribes enjoyment of their several portions; and the land was at peace. |
[1] It is not clear whether the Israelites refrained from burning these cities, so as to enjoy the benefit of their fortifications, or failed to capture them, owing to the strength of their natural positions. ‘The region west of them’ should be, according to the Hebrew text, ‘the Jordan valley’.
[2] Probably this means the hills round Samaria, as opposed to that of Juda. The two names are used below, in verse 21, and are used by anticipation, so far as the present history is concerned (the distinction between ‘Israel’ and ‘Juda’ belonging to a period after the death of Solomon).
