1 καὶ ἐγένετο ἡνίκα ᾠκοδομήθη τὸ τεῖχος καὶ ἔστησα τὰς θύρας καὶ ἐπεσκέπησαν οἱ πυλωροὶ καὶ οἱ ᾄδοντες καὶ οἱ Λευῖται 2 καὶ ἐνετειλάμην τῷ Ανανια ἀδελφῷ μου καὶ τῷ Ανανια ἄρχοντι τῆς βιρα ἐν Ιερουσαλημ ὅτι αὐτὸς ὡς ἀνὴρ ἀληθὴς καὶ φοβούμενος τὸν θεὸν παρὰ πολλούς 3 καὶ εἶπα αὐτοῖς οὐκ ἀνοιγήσονται πύλαι Ιερουσαλημ ἕως ἅμα τῷ ἡλίῳ καὶ ἔτι αὐτῶν γρηγορούντων κλειέσθωσαν αἱ θύραι καὶ σφηνούσθωσαν καὶ στῆσον προφύλακας οἰκούντων ἐν Ιερουσαλημ ἀνὴρ ἐν προφυλακῇ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀνὴρ ἀπέναντι οἰκίας αὐτοῦ | 1 When the wall was finished, and I had set up the gates, I made a register of the door-keepers; of the singers, too, and the Levites. 2 Then I entrusted the defence of the city to my kinsman Hanani, and to Hananias, who was controller of the temple palace at Jerusalem, and eminent, as it seemed to me, in honour and piety; 3 these I made answerable for seeing to it that the gates should never be opened till the sun was up. At nightfall, the gates must be bolted and barred in their presence. And such citizens of Jerusalem as had houses facing the wall must take their turn at keeping watch. |
4 καὶ ἡ πόλις πλατεῖα καὶ μεγάλη καὶ ὁ λαὸς ὀλίγος ἐν αὐτῇ καὶ οὐκ ἦσαν οἰκίαι ᾠκοδομημέναι 5 καὶ ἔδωκεν ὁ θεὸς εἰς τὴν καρδίαν μου καὶ συνῆξα τοὺς ἐντίμους καὶ τοὺς ἄρχοντας καὶ τὸν λαὸν εἰς συνοδίας καὶ εὗρον βιβλίον τῆς συνοδίας οἳ ἀνέβησαν ἐν πρώτοις καὶ εὗρον γεγραμμένον ἐν αὐτῷ | 4 Far and wide the city stretched, and its citizens were few and far between; the houses in it had not yet been repaired. 5 But I, God putting such a resolve into my heart, mustered them all, nobles, rulers and common citizens alike, to make a register of them. I found the old register, with the names of those who first returned from exile, and their numbers, it proved, were as follows. |

[1] vv. 6-69, cf. I Esdras 2.1-67. It is evident from the slight variations which will be noticed among the figures that our text of the sacred scriptures is not always immune from occasional errors in copying.
[2] The note here given is only found in the Latin version. It will be observed that verse 73 here is nevertheless a repetition of I Esdras 2.70, and seems to belong to the register-document.
