2 In later days, the mountain where the Lord dwells will be lifted high above the mountain-tops, looking down over the hills, and all nations will flock there together. 3 A multitude of peoples will make their way to it, crying, Come, let us climb up to the Lord’s mountain-peak, to the house where the God of Jacob dwells; he shall teach us the right way, we will walk in the paths he has chosen. The Lord’s commands shall go out from Sion, his word from Jerusalem, 4 and he will sit in judgement on the nations, giving his award to a multitude of peoples. They will melt down their swords into plough-shares, their spears into pruning-hooks, nation levying war against nation and training itself for battle no longer. 5 Come you too (they will say), children of Jacob, let us walk together in the path where the Lord shews us light. 2

Et erit in novissimis diebus:
præparatus mons domus Domini
in vertice montium,
et elevabitur super colles;
et fluent ad eum omnes gentes,
3
et ibunt populi multi, et dicent:
Venite, et ascendamus ad montem Domini,
et ad domum Dei Jacob;
et docebit nos vias suas,
et ambulabimus in semitis ejus,
quia de Sion exibit lex,
et verbum Domini de Jerusalem.
4
Et judicabit gentes,
et arguet populos multos;
et conflabunt gladios suos in vomeres,
et lanceas suas in falces.
Non levabit gens contra gentem gladium,
nec exercebuntur ultra ad prælium.
5
Domus Jacob, venite,
et ambulemus in lumine Domini.
6 ἀνῆκεν γὰρ τὸν λαὸν αὐτοῦ τὸν οἶκον τοῦ Ισραηλ ὅτι ἐνεπλήσθη ὡς τὸ ἀ{P'} ἀρχῆς ἡ χώρα αὐτῶν κληδονισμῶν ὡς ἡ τῶν ἀλλοφύλων καὶ τέκνα πολλὰ ἀλλόφυλα ἐγενήθη αὐτοῖς 7 ἐνεπλήσθη γὰρ ἡ χώρα αὐτῶν ἀργυρίου καὶ χρυσίου καὶ οὐκ ἦν ἀριθμὸς τῶν θησαυρῶν αὐτῶν καὶ ἐνεπλήσθη ἡ γῆ ἵππων καὶ οὐκ ἦν ἀριθμὸς τῶν ἁρμάτων αὐτῶν 8 καὶ ἐνεπλήσθη ἡ γῆ βδελυγμάτων τῶν ἔργων τῶν χειρῶν αὐτῶν καὶ προσεκύνησαν οἷς ἐποίησαν οἱ δάκτυλοι αὐτῶν 9 καὶ ἔκυψεν ἄνθρωπος καὶ ἐταπεινώθη ἀνήρ καὶ οὐ μὴ ἀνήσω αὐτούς 6 And still they are cast off, these children of Jacob, the Lord’s own people; ever since they grew rich, like the men who went before them,[1] and began to trust in divination, like the Philistines, and to ally themselves with men of alien breed. 7 A land full of silver and gold, with no end to its treasures, 8 a land full of horses and chariots innumerable; a land full of idols, where men worship the devices their own hands have made. 9 For this, high and low fall to earth, abate their human pride; and shall they find forgiveness? 6

Projecisti enim populum tuum,
domum Jacob,
quia repleti sunt ut olim,
et augeres habuerunt ut Philisthiim,
et pueris alienis adhæserunt.
7
Repleta est terra argento et auro,
et non est finis thesaurorum ejus.
8
Et repleta est terra ejus equis,
et innumerabiles quadrigæ ejus.
Et repleta est terra ejus idolis;
opus manuum suarum adoraverunt,
quod fecerunt digiti eorum.
9
Et incurvavit se homo,
et humiliatus est vir;
ne ergo dimittas eis.
11 Now indeed man’s haughty looks must fall to earth, human pride must be abated; no room for any greatness but the Lord’s, when that day comes. 12 The day of the Lord of hosts! With the dawn of it all human pomp and state must be overshadowed, all human magnificence grow dim. 13 High it will rise above the cedars of Lebanon, that grow so straight and tall, above the oaks of Basan; 14 above aspiring mountain and swelling hill; 15 above every topless tower, every impregnable citadel, 16 above all the navies of Tharsis, above every sight that is fair to see. 17 Shall not man’s greatness fall to earth, shall not human pride be abated then? No room for any magnificence but the Lord’s, when that day comes. 18 Vanished the false gods, 19 only cave in the rock, crevice in the ground will afford shelter, when the Lord comes, great and terrible, when he rises up to smite earth with dread! 20 Flung away, when that day comes, idols of silver and gold they once made and worshipped; moles and bats all their worship now, 21 as they slink into clefts of the hills, into rocky caverns, to hide themselves from the terrors of the Lord’s coming, from this sublime majesty that daunts the earth! 22 Trouble mankind no more;[2] this at least man can boast, he has the breath of life in his nostrils. 10
Ingredere in petram, et abscondere in fossa humo
a facie timoris Domini, et a gloria majestatis ejus.
11
Oculi sublimes hominis humiliati sunt,
et incurvabitur altitudo virorum;
exaltabitur autem Dominus solus
in die illa.
12
Quia dies Domini exercituum
super omnem superbum, et excelsum,
et super omnem arrogantem,
et humiliabitur;
13
et super omnes cedros Libani sublimes et erectas,
et super omnes quercus Basan,
14
et super omnes montes excelsos,
et super omnes colles elevatos,
15
et super omnem turrim excelsam,
et super omnem murum munitum,
16
et super omnes naves Tharsis,
et super omne quod visu pulchrum est,
17
et incurvabitur sublimitas hominum,
et humiliabitur altitudo virorum,
et elevabitur Dominus solus
in die illa;
18
et idola penitus conterentur;
19
et introibunt in speluncas petrarum,
et in voragines terræ,
a facie formidinis Domini
et a gloria majestatis ejus,
cum surrexerit percutere terram.
20
In die illa projiciet homo
idola argenti sui, et simulacra auri sui,
quæ fecerat sibi ut adoraret,
talpas et vespertiliones.
21
Et ingreditur scissuras petrarum
et in cavernas saxorum,
a facie formidinis Domini,
et a gloria majestatis ejus,
cum surrexerit percutere terram.
22
Quiescite ergo ab homine,
cujus spiritus in naribus ejus est,
quia excelsus reputatus est ipse.
