1 πνεῦμα κυρίου ἐ{P'} ἐμέ οὗ εἵνεκεν ἔχρισέν με εὐαγγελίσασθαι πτωχοῖς ἀπέσταλκέν με ἰάσασθαι τοὺς συντετριμμένους τῇ καρδίᾳ κηρύξαι αἰχμαλώτοις ἄφεσιν καὶ τυφλοῖς ἀνάβλεψιν 2 καλέσαι ἐνιαυτὸν κυρίου δεκτὸν καὶ ἡμέραν ἀνταποδόσεως παρακαλέσαι πάντας τοὺς πενθοῦντας 3 δοθῆναι τοῖς πενθοῦσιν Σιων δόξαν ἀντὶ σποδοῦ ἄλειμμα εὐφροσύνης τοῖς πενθοῦσιν καταστολὴν δόξης ἀντὶ πνεύματος ἀκηδίας καὶ κληθήσονται γενεαὶ δικαιοσύνης φύτευμα κυρίου εἰς δόξαν 4 καὶ οἰκοδομήσουσιν ἐρήμους αἰωνίας ἐξηρημωμένας πρότερον ἐξαναστήσουσιν καὶ καινιοῦσιν πόλεις ἐρήμους ἐξηρημωμένας εἰς γενεάς 1 The Lord has anointed me, on me his spirit has fallen; he has sent me to bring good news to men that are humbled, to heal broken hearts, promising the release of captives, the opening of prison doors, 2 proclaiming the year of the Lord’s pardon, the day when he, our God, will give us redress. Comfort for every mourner; 3 Sion’s mourners, what decree should I make for them, what gift offer them? Heads shall be garlanded, that once were strewn with ashes; bright with oil, the faces that were marred with grief; gaily they shall be clad, that went sorrowing. Sturdy growths (men will say) that fulfil hope reposed in them,[1] pride of the Lord’s planting! 4 Theirs to rebuild what long has lain desolate, repair the ruins of past days, restore the forsaken cities that were lost, we thought, for ever. 1

Spiritus Domini super me,
eo quod unxerit Dominus me;
ad annuntiandum mansuetis misit me,
ut mederer contritis corde,
et prædicarem captivis indulgentiam,
et clausis apertionem;
2
ut prædicarem annum placabilem Domino,
et diem ultionis Deo nostro;
ut consolarer omnes lugentes,
3
ut ponerem lugentibus Sion,
et darem eis coronam pro cinere,
oleum gaudii pro luctu,
pallium laudis pro spiritu mœroris;
et vocabuntur in ea fortes justitiæ,
plantatio Domini ad glorificandum.
4
Et ædificabunt deserta a sæculo,
et ruinas antiquas erigent,
et instaurabunt civitates desertas,
dissipatas in generationem et generationem.
5 καὶ ἥξουσιν ἀλλογενεῖς ποιμαίνοντες τὰ πρόβατά σου καὶ ἀλλόφυλοι ἀροτῆρες καὶ ἀμπελουργοί 6 ὑμεῖς δὲ ἱερεῖς κυρίου κληθήσεσθε λειτουργοὶ θεοῦ ἰσχὺν ἐθνῶν κατέδεσθε καὶ ἐν τῷ πλούτῳ αὐτῶν θαυμασθήσεσθε 7 οὕτως ἐκ δευτέρας κληρονομήσουσιν τὴν γῆν καὶ εὐφροσύνη αἰώνιος ὑπὲρ κεφαλῆς αὐτῶν 8 ἐγὼ γάρ εἰμι κύριος ὁ ἀγαπῶν δικαιοσύνην καὶ μισῶν ἁρπάγματα ἐξ ἀδικίας καὶ δώσω τὸν μόχθον αὐτῶν δικαίοις καὶ διαθήκην αἰώνιον διαθήσομαι αὐτοῖς 9 καὶ γνωσθήσεται ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν τὸ σπέρμα αὐτῶν καὶ τὰ ἔκγονα αὐτῶν πᾶς ὁ ὁρῶν αὐτοὺς ἐπιγνώσεται αὐτούς ὅτι οὗτοί εἰσιν σπέρμα ηὐλογημένον ὑπὸ θεοῦ 5 Strangers they shall be that tend your flocks for you, farm and vineyard alien hands shall till; 6 for you, a higher name, a greater calling, priests and chosen ministers of the Lord our God. All the wealth of the nations shall be yours to enjoy, their spoils shall be your boast; 7 for double portion of shame and contempt, you shall be twice honoured now. Twice happy that home-coming, eternal that content;[2] 8 I am the Lord, that love to give each his due, resent the wrong, when men rob me of my sacrifice. Faithfully I will give them their recompense, bind myself, now, by an eternal covenant. 9 Such a race shall spring from them, as all the nations of the world shall acknowledge; none that sees them but shall know them for a people the Lord has blessed. 5
Et stabunt alieni, et pascent pecora vestra,
et filii peregrinorum agricolæ et vinitores vestri erunt.
6
Vos autem sacerdotes Domini vocabimini:
Ministri Dei nostri, dicetur vobis,
fortitudinem gentium comedetis,
et in gloria earum superbietis.
7
Pro confusione vestra duplici et rubore,
laudabunt partem suam;
propter hoc in terra sua duplicia possidebunt,
lætitia sempiterna erit eis.
8
Quia ego Dominus diligens judicium,
et odio habens rapinam in holocausto;
et dabo opus eorum in veritate,
et fœdus perpetuum feriam eis.
9
Et scient in gentibus semen eorum,
et germen eorum in medio populorum;
omnes qui viderint eos cognoscent illos,
quia isti sunt semen cui benedixit Dominus.
10 καὶ εὐφροσύνῃ εὐφρανθήσονται ἐπὶ κύριον ἀγαλλιάσθω ἡ ψυχή μου ἐπὶ τῷ κυρίῳ ἐνέδυσεν γάρ με ἱμάτιον σωτηρίου καὶ χιτῶνα εὐφροσύνης ὡς νυμφίῳ περιέθηκέν μοι μίτραν καὶ ὡς νύμφην κατεκόσμησέν με κόσμῳ 11 καὶ ὡς γῆν αὔξουσαν τὸ ἄνθος αὐτῆς καὶ ὡς κῆπος τὰ σπέρματα αὐτοῦ οὕτως ἀνατελεῖ κύριος δικαιοσύνην καὶ ἀγαλλίαμα ἐναντίον πάντων τῶν ἐθνῶν 10 Well may I rejoice in the Lord, well may this heart triumph in my God. The deliverance he sends is like a garment that wraps me about, his mercy like a cloak enfolding me; no bridegroom so proud of garland that crowns him, no bride of the necklace she wears. 11 See how yonder earth gives promise of spring, how the garden seeds give promise of flower! And the Lord God will make good his promise for all the world to see; a spring-time of deliverance and renown. 10
Gaudens gaudebo in Domino,
et exsultabit anima mea in Deo meo,
quia induit me vestimentis salutis,
et indumento justitiæ circumdedit me,
quasi sponsum decoratum corona,
et quasi sponsam ornatam monilibus suis.
11
Sicut enim terra profert germen suum,
et sicut hortus semen suum germinat,
sic Dominus Deus germinabit justitiam
et laudem coram universis gentibus.
