1 καὶ ἐν τῷ ὀγδόῳ καὶ τριακοστῷ ἔτει τῆς βασιλείας Ασα ἀνέβη Βαασα βασιλεὺς Ισραηλ ἐπὶ Ιουδαν καὶ ᾠκοδόμησεν τὴν Ραμα τοῦ μὴ δοῦναι ἔξοδον καὶ εἴσοδον τῷ Ασα βασιλεῖ Ιουδα 2 καὶ ἔλαβεν Ασα χρυσίον καὶ ἀργύριον ἐκ θησαυρῶν οἴκου κυρίου καὶ οἴκου τοῦ βασιλέως καὶ ἀπέστειλεν πρὸς τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ Αδερ βασιλέως Συρίας τὸν κατοικοῦντα ἐν Δαμασκῷ λέγων 3 διάθου διαθήκην ἀνὰ μέσον ἐμοῦ καὶ σοῦ καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον τοῦ πατρός μου καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον τοῦ πατρός σου ἰδοὺ ἀπέσταλκά σοι χρυσίον καὶ ἀργύριον δεῦρο καὶ διασκέδασον ἀ{P'} ἐμοῦ τὸν Βαασα βασιλέα Ισραηλ καὶ ἀπελθέτω ἀ{P'} ἐμοῦ 4 καὶ ἤκουσεν υἱὸς Αδερ τοῦ βασιλέως Ασα καὶ ἀπέστειλεν τοὺς ἄρχοντας τῆς δυνάμεως αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τὰς πόλεις Ισραηλ καὶ ἐπάταξεν τὴν Ιων καὶ τὴν Δαν καὶ τὴν Αβελμαιν καὶ πάσας τὰς περιχώρους Νεφθαλι 5 καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ ἀκοῦσαι Βαασα ἀπέλιπεν τοῦ μηκέτι οἰκοδομεῖν τὴν Ραμα καὶ κατέπαυσεν τὸ ἔργον αὐτοῦ 6 καὶ Ασα ὁ βασιλεὺς ἔλαβεν πάντα τὸν Ιουδαν καὶ ἔλαβεν τοὺς λίθους τῆς Ραμα καὶ τὰ ξύλα αὐτῆς ἃ ᾠκοδόμησεν Βαασα καὶ ᾠκοδόμησεν ἐν αὐτοῖς τὴν Γαβαε καὶ τὴν Μασφα | 1 Then, in the thirty-sixth year of Asa’s reign, Baasa king of Israel invaded Juda, and began making a fortified city of Rama, so as to deny Asa’s subjects free passage. 2 Whereupon Asa took out all the silver and gold that was left in the treasure-chambers of temple and palace; this he sent to Benadad, king of Syria, at Damascus, with the message, 3 There is an alliance between us; were not thy father and mine ever at peace? Witness these gifts of silver and gold I send thee; do thou annul the treaty thou hast made with Baasa, king of Israel, and help me drive him out of my country. 4 Thus approached, Benadad sent out his generals with orders to attack the cities of Israel; Ahion they overcame, and Dan, and Abelmaim, and all the fortified cities of Nephthali. 5 So Baasa, when the news reached him, left his plan of fortifying Rama half-finished; 6 and Asa, with all Juda at his back, carried off the stones and wood-work that should have been used towards it, and with these fortified Gabaa and Maspha instead. |
7 καὶ ἐν τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ ἦλθεν Ανανι ὁ προφήτης πρὸς Ασα βασιλέα Ιουδα καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ἐν τῷ πεποιθέναι σε ἐπὶ βασιλέα Συρίας καὶ μὴ πεποιθέναι σε ἐπὶ κύριον θεόν σου διὰ τοῦτο ἐσώθη δύναμις Συρίας ἀπὸ τῆς χειρός σου 8 οὐχ οἱ Αἰθίοπες καὶ Λίβυες ἦσαν εἰς δύναμιν πολλὴν εἰς θάρσος εἰς ἱππεῖς εἰς πλῆθος σφόδρα καὶ ἐν τῷ πεποιθέναι σε ἐπὶ κύριον παρέδωκεν εἰς τὰς χεῖράς σου 9 ὅτι οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ κυρίου ἐπιβλέπουσιν ἐν πάσῃ τῇ γῇ κατισχῦσαι ἐν πάσῃ καρδίᾳ πλήρει πρὸς αὐτόν ἠγνόηκας ἐπὶ τούτῳ ἀπὸ τοῦ νῦν ἔσται μετὰ σοῦ πόλεμος 10 καὶ ἐθυμώθη Ασα τῷ προφήτῃ καὶ παρέθετο αὐτὸν εἰς φυλακήν ὅτι ὠργίσθη ἐπὶ τούτῳ καὶ ἐλυμήνατο Ασα ἐν τῷ λαῷ ἐν τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ | 7 Thereupon the prophet Hanani came into the royal presence, with this message: This was ill done, to call the king of Syria to thy aid. If thou hadst put thy trust in the Lord, the army of Syria itself should have been at thy mercy. 8 Stronger in chariots and horsemen, stronger in their huge array, were the Libyans and Ethiopians over whom the Lord gave thee mastery, in return for thy trust. 9 Wide as earth is the Lord’s scrutiny, and there he gives mastery where he finds hearts that have utter faith in him. Thou hast played a fool’s part; henceforward, there shall be no lack of wars to threaten thee. 10 At this, Asa fell into a rage, and had the prophet committed to prison, to vent his high displeasure; it was at this time, too, that he put many of his subjects to death. |
11 καὶ ἰδοὺ οἱ λόγοι Ασα οἱ πρῶτοι καὶ οἱ ἔσχατοι γεγραμμένοι ἐν βιβλίῳ βασιλέων Ιουδα καὶ Ισραηλ 12 καὶ ἐμαλακίσθη Ασα ἐν τῷ ἐνάτῳ καὶ τριακοστῷ ἔτει τῆς βασιλείας αὐτοῦ τοὺς πόδας ἕως σφόδρα ἐμαλακίσθη καὶ ἐν τῇ μαλακίᾳ αὐτοῦ οὐκ ἐζήτησεν κύριον ἀλλὰ τοὺς ἰατρούς 13 καὶ ἐκοιμήθη Ασα μετὰ τῶν πατέρων αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐτελεύτησεν ἐν τῷ ἐνάτῳ καὶ τριακοστῷ ἔτει τῆς βασιλείας αὐτοῦ 14 καὶ ἔθαψαν αὐτὸν ἐν τῷ μνήματι ᾧ ὤρυξεν ἑαυτῷ ἐν πόλει Δαυιδ καὶ ἐκοίμισαν αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τῆς κλίνης καὶ ἔπλησαν ἀρωμάτων καὶ γένη μύρων μυρεψῶν καὶ ἐποίησαν αὐτῷ ἐκφορὰν μεγάλην ἕως σφόδρα | 11 All that Asa did, first and last, is set down in the Annals of the kings of Israel and Juda. 12 In the thirty-ninth year of his reign, a malignant disease attacked his feet; nor, in that sickness, did he have recourse to the Lord, trusting rather in the skill of physicians. 13 So, dying in the fortieth year of his reign, he was laid to rest with his fathers,[1] 14 and they buried him in the tomb that had been dug for him by his own orders, in the Keep of David. There he lay, on his own bed, that was piled high with spices and rare ointments, mingled with all the perfumer’s art; and these, in high funeral pomp, they burned over his grave. |
