Melody, The hind at dawn. A psalm. Of David.) In finem, pro susceptione matutina. Psalmus David.
Loudly I call, but my prayer cannot reach thee. 3 Thou dost not answer, my God, when I cry out to thee day and night, thou dost not heed.[1] 4 Thou art there none the less, dwelling in the holy place; Israel’s ancient boast. 5 It was in thee that our fathers trusted, and thou didst reward their trust by delivering them; 6 they cried to thee, and rescue came; no need to be ashamed of such trust as theirs. 7 But I, poor worm, have no manhood left; I am a by-word to all, the laughing-stock of the rabble. 8 All those who catch sight of me fall to mocking; mouthing out insults, while they toss their heads in scorn, 9 He committed himself to the Lord, why does not the Lord come to his rescue, and set his favourite free? 2 Deus, Deus meus, respice in me: quare me dereliquisti?
longe a salute mea verba delictorum meorum.
3
Deus meus, clamabo per diem, et non exaudies;
et nocte, et non ad insipientiam mihi.
4
Tu autem in sancto habitas, laus Israël.
5
In te speraverunt patres nostri;
speraverunt, et liberasti eos.
6
Ad te clamaverunt, et salvi facti sunt;
in te speraverunt, et non sunt confusi.
7
Ego autem sum vermis, et non homo;
opprobrium hominum, et abjectio plebis.
8
Omnes videntes me deriserunt me;
locuti sunt labiis, et moverunt caput.
9
Speravit in Domino, eripiat eum:
salvum faciat eum, quoniam vult eum.
Who else was my refuge when I hung at the breast? 11 From the hour of my birth, thou art my guardian; since I left my mother’s womb, thou art my God! 12 Do not leave me now, when trouble is close at hand; stand near, when I have none to help me. 13 My enemies ring me round, packed close as a herd of oxen, strong as bulls from Basan; 14 so might a lion threaten me with its jaws, roaring for its prey. 15 I am spent as spilt water, all my bones out of joint, my heart turned to molten wax within me; 16 parched is my throat, like clay in the baking, and my tongue sticks fast in my mouth; thou hast laid me in the dust, to die. 17 Prowling about me like a pack of dogs, their wicked conspiracy hedges me in; they have torn holes in my hands and feet; 18 I can count my bones one by one; and they stand there watching me, gazing at me in triumph. 19 They divide my spoils among them, cast lots for my garments. 20 Then, Lord, do not stand at a distance; if thou wouldst aid me, come speedily to my side. 21 Only life is left me; save that from the sword, from the power of these dogs; 22 rescue me from the very mouth of the lion, the very horns of the wild oxen that have brought me thus low. 10
11
In te projectus sum ex utero;
12
ne discesseris a me,
quoniam tribulatio proxima est,
quoniam non est qui adjuvet.
13
Circumdederunt me vituli multi;
tauri pingues obsederunt me.
14
Aperuerunt super me os suum,
sicut leo rapiens et rugiens.
15
Sicut aqua effusus sum,
et dispersa sunt omnia ossa mea:
factum est cor meum tamquam cera liquescens in medio ventris mei.
16
Aruit tamquam testa virtus mea,
et lingua mea adhæsit faucibus meis:
et in pulverem mortis deduxisti me.
17
Quoniam circumdederunt me canes multi;
concilium malignantium obsedit me.
Foderunt manus meas et pedes meos;
18
dinumeraverunt omnia ossa mea.
Ipsi vero consideraverunt et inspexerunt me.
19
Diviserunt sibi vestimenta mea,
et super vestem meam miserunt sortem.
20
Tu autem, Domine, ne elongaveris auxilium tuum a me;
ad defensionem meam conspice.
21
Erue a framea, Deus, animam meam,
et de manu canis unicam meam.
22
Salva me ex ore leonis,
et a cornibus unicornium humilitatem meam.
23 διηγήσομαι τὸ ὄνομά σου τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς μου ἐν μέσῳ ἐκκλησίας ὑμνήσω σε 24 οἱ φοβούμενοι κύριον αἰνέσατε αὐτόν ἅπαν τὸ σπέρμα Ιακωβ δοξάσατε αὐτόν φοβηθήτωσαν αὐτὸν ἅπαν τὸ σπέρμα Ισραηλ 25 ὅτι οὐκ ἐξουδένωσεν οὐδὲ προσώχθισεν τῇ δεήσει τοῦ πτωχοῦ οὐδὲ ἀπέστρεψεν τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ ἀ{P'} ἐμοῦ καὶ ἐν τῷ κεκραγέναι με πρὸς αὐτὸν εἰσήκουσέν μου 26 παρὰ σοῦ ὁ ἔπαινός μου ἐν ἐκκλησίᾳ μεγάλῃ τὰς εὐχάς μου ἀποδώσω ἐνώπιον τῶν φοβουμένων αὐτόν 27 φάγονται πένητες καὶ ἐμπλησθήσονται καὶ αἰνέσουσιν κύριον οἱ ἐκζητοῦντες αὐτόν ζήσονται αἱ καρδίαι αὐτῶν εἰς αἰῶνα αἰῶνος 28 μνησθήσονται καὶ ἐπιστραφήσονται πρὸς κύριον πάντα τὰ πέρατα τῆς γῆς καὶ προσκυνήσουσιν ἐνώπιόν σου πᾶσαι αἱ πατριαὶ τῶν ἐθνῶν 29 ὅτι τοῦ κυρίου ἡ βασιλεία καὶ αὐτὸς δεσπόζει τῶν ἐθνῶν 30 ἔφαγον καὶ προσεκύνησαν πάντες οἱ πίονες τῆς γῆς ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ προπεσοῦνται πάντες οἱ καταβαίνοντες εἰς τὴν γῆν καὶ ἡ ψυχή μου αὐτῷ ζῇ 31 καὶ τὸ σπέρμα μου δουλεύσει αὐτῷ ἀναγγελήσεται τῷ κυρίῳ γενεὰ ἡ ἐρχομένη 32 καὶ ἀναγγελοῦσιν τὴν δικαιοσύνην αὐτοῦ λαῷ τῷ τεχθησομένῳ ὅτι ἐποίησεν ὁ κύριος 23 Then I will proclaim thy renown to my brethren; where thy people gather, I will join in singing thy praise, 24 Praise the Lord, all you that are his worshippers; honour to him from the sons of Jacob, reverence to him from Israel’s race! 25 He has not scorned or slighted the appeal of the friendless, nor turned his face away from me; my cry for help did not go unheeded. 26 Take what I owe thee, my song of praise before a great assembly. I will pay my vows to the Lord in the sight of his worshippers; 27 the poor shall eat now, and have their fill, those who look for the Lord will cry out in praise of him, Refreshed be your hearts eternally! 28 The furthest dwellers on earth will bethink themselves of the Lord, and come back to him; all the races of the heathen will worship before him; 29 to the Lord royalty belongs, the whole world’s homage is his due. 30 Him shall they worship, him only, that are laid to rest in the earth, even from their dust they shall adore. 31 I, too, shall live on in his presence,[2] and beget children to serve him; these to a later age shall speak of the Lord’s name; 32 these to a race that must yet be born shall tell the story of his faithfulness, Hear what the Lord did. 23
Narrabo nomen tuum fratribus meis;
in medio ecclesiæ laudabo te.
24
Qui timetis Dominum, laudate eum;
universum semen Jacob, glorificate eum.
25
Timeat eum omne semen Israël,
quoniam non sprevit, neque despexit deprecationem pauperis,
nec avertit faciem suam a me:
et cum clamarem ad eum, exaudivit me.
26
Apud te laus mea in ecclesia magna;
vota mea reddam in conspectu timentium eum.
27
Edent pauperes, et saturabuntur,
et laudabunt Dominum qui requirunt eum:
vivent corda eorum in sæculum sæculi.
28
Reminiscentur et convertentur ad Dominum universi fines terræ;
et adorabunt in conspectu ejus universæ familiæ gentium:
29
quoniam Domini est regnum,
et ipse dominabitur gentium.
30
Manducaverunt et adoraverunt omnes pingues terræ;
in conspectu ejus cadent omnes qui descendunt in terram.
31
Et anima mea illi vivet;
et semen meum serviet ipsi.
32
Annuntiabitur Domino generatio ventura;
et annuntiabunt cæli justitiam ejus
populo qui nascetur, quem fecit Dominus.
