(A psalm. Of Asaph.) | Psalmus Asaph. |
1 ψαλμὸς τῷ Ασαφ ὁ θεὸς ἔστη ἐν συναγωγῇ θεῶν ἐν μέσῳ δὲ θεοὺς διακρίνει 2 ἕως πότε κρίνετε ἀδικίαν καὶ πρόσωπα ἁμαρτωλῶν λαμβάνετε διάψαλμα 3 κρίνατε ὀρφανὸν καὶ πτωχόν ταπεινὸν καὶ πένητα δικαιώσατε 4 ἐξέλεσθε πένητα καὶ πτωχόν ἐκ χειρὸς ἁμαρτωλοῦ ῥύσασθε 5 οὐκ ἔγνωσαν οὐδὲ συνῆκαν ἐν σκότει διαπορεύονται σαλευθήσονται πάντα τὰ θεμέλια τῆς γῆς 6 ἐγὼ εἶπα θεοί ἐστε καὶ υἱοὶ ὑψίστου πάντες 7 ὑμεῖς δὲ ὡς ἄνθρωποι ἀποθνῄσκετε καὶ ὡς εἷς τῶν ἀρχόντων πίπτετε 8 ἀνάστα ὁ θεός κρῖνον τὴν γῆν ὅτι σὺ κατακληρονομήσεις ἐν πᾶσιν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν | 1 See, where he stands, the Ruler of all, among the rulers[1] assembled, comes for-ward to pronounce judgement on the rulers themselves! 2 Will you never cease perverting justice, espousing the cause of the wicked? 3 Come, give redress to the poor and the friendless, do right to the afflicted and the destitute; 4 to you need and poverty look for deliverance, rescue them from the hand of the wickedness. 5 But no, ignorant and unperceiving, they grope their way in darkness; see how unstable are the props of earth! 6 Gods you are, I myself have declared it; favoured children, every one of you, of the most High;[2] 7 yet the doom of mortals awaits you, you shall fall with the fall of human princes. 8 Bestir thyself, Lord, bring the world to judgement; all the nations are thy own domain. | 1 Deus stetit in synagoga deorum; in medio autem deos dijudicat. 8 Surge, Deus, judica terram, quoniam tu hæreditabis in omnibus gentibus. |
[1] Literally ‘gods’ as in verse 6, the Divine name being specially applied in this way to judges (cf. Ex. 21.6).
