A psalm. Of the sons of Core. To the choir-master. Melody: Mahalat. For singing. A maskil. Of Heman the Ezrahite.) Canticum Psalmi, filiis Core, in finem, pro Maheleth ad respondendum. Intellectus Eman Ezrahitæ.
2 κύριε ὁ θεὸς τῆς σωτηρίας μου ἡμέρας ἐκέκραξα καὶ ἐν νυκτὶ ἐναντίον σου 3 εἰσελθάτω ἐνώπιόν σου ἡ προσευχή μου κλῖνον τὸ οὖς σου εἰς τὴν δέησίν μου κύριε 4 ὅτι ἐπλήσθη κακῶν ἡ ψυχή μου καὶ ἡ ζωή μου τῷ ᾅδῃ ἤγγισεν 5 προσελογίσθην μετὰ τῶν καταβαινόντων εἰς λάκκον ἐγενήθην ὡς ἄνθρωπος ἀβοήθητος ἐν νεκροῖς ἐλεύθερος 6 ὡσεὶ τραυματίαι ἐρριμμένοι καθεύδοντες ἐν τάφῳ ὧν οὐκ ἐμνήσθης ἔτι καὶ αὐτοὶ ἐκ τῆς χειρός σου ἀπώσθησαν 7 ἔθεντό με ἐν λάκκῳ κατωτάτῳ ἐν σκοτεινοῖς καὶ ἐν σκιᾷ θανάτου 8 ἐ{P'} ἐμὲ ἐπεστηρίχθη ὁ θυμός σου καὶ πάντας τοὺς μετεωρισμούς σου ἐ{P'} ἐμὲ ἐπήγαγες διάψαλμα 9 ἐμάκρυνας τοὺς γνωστούς μου ἀ{P'} ἐμοῦ ἔθεντό με βδέλυγμα ἑαυτοῖς παρεδόθην καὶ οὐκ ἐξεπορευόμην 10 οἱ ὀφθαλμοί μου ἠσθένησαν ἀπὸ πτωχείας ἐκέκραξα πρὸς σέ κύριε ὅλην τὴν ἡμέραν διεπέτασα πρὸς σὲ τὰς χεῖράς μου 2 Lord God, day and night I cry bitterly to thee; 3 let my prayer reach thy pre-sence, give audience to my entreaty, 4 for indeed my heart is full of trouble. My life sinks ever closer to the grave; 5 I count as one of those who go down into the abyss, like one powerless. 6 As well lie among the dead, men laid low in the grave, men thou rememberest no longer, cast away, now, from thy protecting hand. 7 Such is the place where thou hast laid me, in a deep pit where the dark waters swirl; 8 heavily thy anger weighs down on me, and thou dost overwhelm me with its full flood. 9 Thou hast estranged all my acquaintance from me, so that they treat me as a thing accursed; I lie in a prison whence there is no escape, 10 my eyes grow dim with tears. On thee I call, to thee stretch out my hands, each day that passes. 2 Domine, Deus salutis meæ,
in die clamavi et nocte coram te.
3
Intret in conspectu tuo oratio mea,
inclina aurem tuam ad precem meam.
4
Quia repleta est malis anima mea,
et vita mea inferno appropinquavit.
5
Æstimatus sum cum descendentibus in lacum,
factus sum sicut homo sine adjutorio,
6
inter mortuos liber;
sicut vulnerati dormientes in sepulchris,
quorum non es memor amplius,
et ipsi de manu tua repulsi sunt.
7
Posuerunt me in lacu inferiori,
in tenebrosis, et in umbra mortis.
8
Super me confirmatus est furor tuus,
et omnes fluctus tuos induxisti super me.
9
Longe fecisti notos meos a me;
posuerunt me abominationem sibi.
Traditus sum, et non egrediebar;
10
oculi mei languerunt præ inopia.
Clamavi ad te, Domine, tota die;
expandi ad te manus meas.
11 μὴ τοῖς νεκροῖς ποιήσεις θαυμάσια ἢ ἰατροὶ ἀναστήσουσιν καὶ ἐξομολογήσονταί σοι 12 μὴ διηγήσεταί τις ἐν τάφῳ τὸ ἔλεός σου καὶ τὴν ἀλήθειάν σου ἐν τῇ ἀπωλείᾳ 13 μὴ γνωσθήσεται ἐν τῷ σκότει τὰ θαυμάσιά σου καὶ ἡ δικαιοσύνη σου ἐν γῇ ἐπιλελησμένῃ 14 κἀγὼ πρὸς σέ κύριε ἐκέκραξα καὶ τὸ πρωὶ ἡ προσευχή μου προφθάσει σε 15 ἵνα τί κύριε ἀπωθεῖς τὴν ψυχήν μου ἀποστρέφεις τὸ πρόσωπόν σου ἀ{P'} ἐμοῦ 16 πτωχός εἰμι ἐγὼ καὶ ἐν κόποις ἐκ νεότητός μου ὑψωθεὶς δὲ ἐταπεινώθην καὶ ἐξηπορήθην 17 ἐ{P'} ἐμὲ διῆλθον αἱ ὀργαί σου καὶ οἱ φοβερισμοί σου ἐξετάραξάν με 18 ἐκύκλωσάν με ὡς ὕδωρ ὅλην τὴν ἡμέραν περιέσχον με ἅμα 19 ἐμάκρυνας ἀ{P'} ἐμοῦ φίλον καὶ πλησίον καὶ τοὺς γνωστούς μου ἀπὸ ταλαιπωρίας 11 Not for the dead thy wonderful power is shewn; not for pale shadows to return and give thee thanks. 12 There in the grave, how shall they recount thy mercies; how shall they tell of thy faithfulness, now that life is gone? 13 How can there be talk of thy marvels in a world of darkness, of thy favour in a land where all is forgotten? 14 To prayer, Lord, fall I lustily; it shall reach thee, while there is yet time. 15 Why dost thou reject my plea, Lord, and turn thy face away from me? 16 Ever since youth, misery and mortal sickness have been my lot; wearily I have borne thy visitations; 17 I am overwhelmed with thy anger, dismayed by thy threats, 18 that still cut me off like a flood, all at once surrounding me. 19 Friends and neighbours gone, a world of shadows is all my company. 11
Numquid mortuis facies mirabilia?
aut medici suscitabunt, et confitebuntur tibi?
12
Numquid narrabit aliquis in sepulchro misericordiam tuam,
et veritatem tuam in perditione?
13
Numquid cognoscentur in tenebris mirabilia tua?
et justitia tua in terra oblivionis?
14
Et ego ad te, Domine, clamavi,
et mane oratio mea præveniet te.
15
Ut quid, Domine, repellis orationem meam;
avertis faciem tuam a me?
16
Pauper sum ego, et in laboribus a juventute mea;
exaltatus autem, humiliatus sum et conturbatus.
17
In me transierunt iræ tuæ,
et terrores tui conturbaverunt me:
18
circumdederunt me sicut aqua tota die;
circumdederunt me simul.
19
Elongasti a me amicum et proximum,
et notos meos a miseria.
