Knox Bible Ad

 (A song of ascents.) Canticum graduum.
1 ᾠδὴ τῶν ἀναβαθμῶν μνήσθητι κύριε τοῦ Δαυιδ καὶ πάσης τῆς πραΰτητος αὐτοῦ 2 ὡς ὤμοσεν τῷ κυρίῳ ηὔξατο τῷ θεῷ Ιακωβ 3 εἰ εἰσελεύσομαι εἰς σκήνωμα οἴκου μου εἰ ἀναβήσομαι ἐπὶ κλίνης στρωμνῆς μου 4 εἰ δώσω ὕπνον τοῖς ὀφθαλμοῖς μου καὶ τοῖς βλεφάροις μου νυσταγμὸν καὶ ἀνάπαυσιν τοῖς κροτάφοις μου 5 ἕως οὗ εὕρω τόπον τῷ κυρίῳ σκήνωμα τῷ θεῷ Ιακωβ 6 ἰδοὺ ἠκούσαμεν αὐτὴν ἐν Εφραθα εὕρομεν αὐτὴν ἐν τοῖς πεδίοις τοῦ δρυμοῦ 7 εἰσελευσόμεθα εἰς τὰ σκηνώματα αὐτοῦ προσκυνήσομεν εἰς τὸν τόπον οὗ ἔστησαν οἱ πόδες αὐτοῦ 8 ἀνάστηθι κύριε εἰς τὴν ἀνάπαυσίν σου σὺ καὶ ἡ κιβωτὸς τοῦ ἁγιάσματός σου 9 οἱ ἱερεῖς σου ἐνδύσονται δικαιοσύνην καὶ οἱ ὅσιοί σου ἀγαλλιάσονται 1 In David’s reckoning, Lord, let not his patient care be forgotten, 2 the oath he swore to the Lord, the vow he made to the great God of Jacob: 3 Never will I come beneath the roof of my house, or climb up into the bed that is strewn for me; 4 never shall these eyes have sleep, these eye-lids close, 5 until I have found the Lord a home, the great God of Jacob a dwelling-place. 6 And now, at Ephrata, we have heard tidings of what we looked for, we have found it in the plains of Jaar;[1] 7 now to go into his dwelling, pay reverence at his footstool! 8 Up, Lord, and take possession of thy resting-place, thou and the ark which is shrine of thy glory! 9 Let thy priests go clad in the vesture of innocence, thy faithful people cry aloud with rejoicing. 1 Memento, Domine, David,
et omnis mansuetudinis ejus:
2
sicut juravit Domino;
votum vovit Deo Jacob:
3
Si introiero in tabernaculum domus meæ;
si ascendero in lectum strati mei;
4
si dedero somnum oculis meis,
et palpebris meis dormitationem,
5
et requiem temporibus meis,
donec inveniam locum Domino,
tabernaculum Deo Jacob.
6
Ecce audivimus eam in Ephrata;
invenimus eam in campis silvæ.
7
Introibimus in tabernaculum ejus;
adorabimus in loco ubi steterunt pedes ejus.
8
Surge, Domine, in requiem tuam,
tu et arca sanctificationis tuæ.
9
Sacerdotes tui induantur justitiam,
et sancti tui exsultent.
11 Never will the Lord be false to that inviolable oath he swore to David: I will raise to thy throne heirs of thy own body; 12 if thy sons hold fast to my covenant, to the decrees which I make known to them, their sons too shall reign on thy throne for ever. 13 The Lord’s choice has fallen upon Sion, this is the dwelling he longed for: 14 Here, for ever, is my resting-place, here is my destined home. 15 Trust me, I will bless her with abundant store, the poor shall have bread to their heart’s content; 16 I will clothe her priests in the vesture of triumph, cries of rejoicing shall echo among her faithful people. 17 There the stock of David shall bud, there shall a lamp burn continually for the king I have anointed.[2] 18 I will cover his enemies with confusion; on his brow the crown I gave shall shine untarnished. 10
Propter David servum tuum
non avertas faciem christi tui.
11
Juravit Dominus David veritatem,
et non frustrabitur eam:
De fructu ventris tui
ponam super sedem tuam.
12
Si custodierint filii tui testamentum meum,
et testimonia mea hæc quæ docebo eos,
et filii eorum usque in sæculum
sedebunt super sedem tuam.
13
Quoniam elegit Dominus Sion:
elegit eam in habitationem sibi.
14
Hæc requies mea in sæculum sæculi;
hic habitabo, quoniam elegi eam.
15
Viduam ejus benedicens benedicam;
pauperes ejus saturabo panibus.
16
Sacerdotes ejus induam salutari,
et sancti ejus exsultatione exsultabunt.
17
Illuc producam cornu David;
paravi lucernam christo meo.
18
Inimicos ejus induam confusione;
super ipsum autem efflorebit sanctificatio mea.
