1 αλληλουια ἐξομολογεῖσθε τῷ κυρίῳ ὅτι χρηστός ὅτι εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα τὸ ἔλεος αὐτοῦ 2 τίς λαλήσει τὰς δυναστείας τοῦ κυρίου ἀκουστὰς ποιήσει πάσας τὰς αἰνέσεις αὐτοῦ 3 μακάριοι οἱ φυλάσσοντες κρίσιν καὶ ποιοῦντες δικαιοσύνην ἐν παντὶ καιρῷ 4 μνήσθητι ἡμῶν κύριε ἐν τῇ εὐδοκίᾳ τοῦ λαοῦ σου ἐπίσκεψαι ἡμᾶς ἐν τῷ σωτηρίῳ σου 5 τοῦ ἰδεῖν ἐν τῇ χρηστότητι τῶν ἐκλεκτῶν σου τοῦ εὐφρανθῆναι ἐν τῇ εὐφροσύνῃ τοῦ ἔθνους σου τοῦ ἐπαινεῖσθαι μετὰ τῆς κληρονομίας σου | 1 Praise the Lord, the Lord is gracious; his mercy endures for ever; 2 what tongue can recount all the great deeds of the Lord, can echo all his praise? 3 Blessed are they who abide ever by his decrees, ever do the right! 4 Remember me, Lord, with loving thoughts towards thy people, come and strengthen me with thy aid, 5 to witness the prosperity of thy chosen servants, to rejoice with thy people that rejoices, to share the glory of thy own domain. | 1 Confitemini Domino, quoniam bonus, quoniam in sæculum misericordia ejus. 2 Quis loquetur potentias Domini; auditas faciet omnes laudes ejus? 3 Beati qui custodiunt judicium, et faciunt justitiam in omni tempore. 4 Memento nostri, Domine, in beneplacito populi tui; visita nos in salutari tuo: 5 ad videndum in bonitate electorum tuorum; ad lætandum in lætitia gentis tuæ: ut lauderis cum hæreditate tua. |
7 So it was with our fathers in Egypt; unremarked, thy wonderful doings, unremembered, thy abundant mercies; even at the Red Sea they must prove rebellious. 8 Yet, for his own honour, to make known his power, he delivered them, 9 checking the Red Sea, so that it dried up, and leading them through its depths as safely as if they trod the desert sands. 10 From a cruel tyrant’s grasp he rescued them, claimed them for his own; 11 and the water overwhelmed their pursuers, till not one of them was left. 12 They believed, then, in his promises, sang songs, then, in his honour, 13 but soon they forgot what he had done, and could not wait upon his will. 14 They must needs give way to their cravings in the wilderness, challenge God’s power, there in the desert, 15 till he granted their will, then sent a wasting sickness to plague them. 16 Faction raised its head in the camp against Moses, against Aaron, the Lord’s chosen priest; 17 and now earth gaped, swallowing up Dathan, overwhelming Abiron and his conspiracy; 18 fire broke out in their company, and the rebels perished by its flames. 19 They made a calf, too, at Horeb, casting a golden image and worshipping it, 20 as if they would exchange the glory that dwelt among them for the semblance of a bullock at grass. 21 So little they remembered the God who had delivered them, those portents of his in Egypt, 22 strange things seen in the land of Cham, terrible things down by the Red Sea! 23 What wonder if he threatened to make an end of them? But Moses, the man of his choice, stood in the breach to confront his anger, to ward off destruction.
So the Lord, finding they would not listen to his voice, 26 lifted his hand and threatened to smite them down, there in the wilderness; 27 they should be lost among the peoples, scattered wide through the world. 28 They dedicated themselves to Beelphegor, in honour of the dead gods sat down to feast; 29 till their wicked ways roused God’s anger, and a plague fell upon them. 30 Nor might the destruction cease, till Phinees rose up and made amends, 31 winning himself such title to God’s favour as shall be remembered, age after age, eternally. 32 They provoked his anger, too, at the waters of Meriba, so that Moses was punished for their sake; 33 because, in his heart’s bitterness, he broke out into open complaint. |
34 οὐκ ἐξωλέθρευσαν τὰ ἔθνη ἃ εἶπεν κύριος αὐτοῖς 35 καὶ ἐμίγησαν ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν καὶ ἔμαθον τὰ ἔργα αὐτῶν 36 καὶ ἐδούλευσαν τοῖς γλυπτοῖς αὐτῶν καὶ ἐγενήθη αὐτοῖς εἰς σκάνδαλον 37 καὶ ἔθυσαν τοὺς υἱοὺς αὐτῶν καὶ τὰς θυγατέρας αὐτῶν τοῖς δαιμονίοις 38 καὶ ἐξέχεαν αἷμα ἀθῷον αἷμα υἱῶν αὐτῶν καὶ θυγατέρων ὧν ἔθυσαν τοῖς γλυπτοῖς Χανααν καὶ ἐφονοκτονήθη ἡ γῆ ἐν τοῖς αἵμασιν 39 καὶ ἐμιάνθη ἐν τοῖς ἔργοις αὐτῶν καὶ ἐπόρνευσαν ἐν τοῖς ἐπιτηδεύμασιν αὐτῶν 40 καὶ ὠργίσθη θυμῷ κύριος ἐπὶ τὸν λαὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐβδελύξατο τὴν κληρονομίαν αὐτοῦ 41 καὶ παρέδωκεν αὐτοὺς εἰς χεῖρας ἐθνῶν καὶ ἐκυρίευσαν αὐτῶν οἱ μισοῦντες αὐτούς 42 καὶ ἔθλιψαν αὐτοὺς οἱ ἐχθροὶ αὐτῶν καὶ ἐταπεινώθησαν ὑπὸ τὰς χεῖρας αὐτῶν 43 πλεονάκις ἐρρύσατο αὐτούς αὐτοὶ δὲ παρεπίκραναν αὐτὸν ἐν τῇ βουλῇ αὐτῶν καὶ ἐταπεινώθησαν ἐν ταῖς ἀνομίαις αὐτῶν 44 καὶ εἶδεν ἐν τῷ θλίβεσθαι αὐτοὺς ἐν τῷ αὐτὸν εἰσακοῦσαι τῆς δεήσεως αὐτῶν 45 καὶ ἐμνήσθη τῆς διαθήκης αὐτοῦ καὶ μετεμελήθη κατὰ τὸ πλῆθος τοῦ ἐλέους αὐτοῦ 46 καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτοὺς εἰς οἰκτιρμοὺς ἐναντίον πάντων τῶν αἰχμαλωτισάντων αὐτούς | 34 Not theirs to root out the heathen, as the Lord had bidden them; 35 they mingled with the heathen instead, and learned their ways; 36 worshipping carved images, to their own undoing, 37 sacrificing their sons and daughters in honour of devils. 38 Innocent blood, the blood of their own sons and daughters, was poured out in worship to the idols of Chanaan; with blood the whole land was polluted, 39 so heinous the guilt of its people, so wanton their ways. 40 Then God’s anger blazed up against his people, his chosen race became abominable to him, 41 and he handed them over to the Gentiles; despised slaves, 42 they were oppressed by their enemies, bowed down under the yoke. 43 Again and again he brought them deliverance, but ever there were fresh shifts to provoke him, there was fresh guilt to drag them in the dust. 44 And still, when he saw their distress, when he heard their appeals to him, 45 the thought him of his covenant availed them; in his great mercy he would relent; 46 their very captors should be moved to pity. |
47 σῶσον ἡμᾶς κύριε ὁ θεὸς ἡμῶν καὶ ἐπισυνάγαγε ἡμᾶς ἐκ τῶν ἐθνῶν τοῦ ἐξομολογήσασθαι τῷ ὀνόματι τῷ ἁγίῳ σου τοῦ ἐγκαυχᾶσθαι ἐν τῇ αἰνέσει σου 48 εὐλογητὸς κύριος ὁ θεὸς Ισραηλ ἀπὸ τοῦ αἰῶνος καὶ ἕως τοῦ αἰῶνος καὶ ἐρεῖ πᾶς ὁ λαός γένοιτο γένοιτο | 47 Deliver us, O Lord our God, and gather us again, scattered as we are among the heathen, to praise thy holy name, to triumph in thy renown. 48 Blessed be the God of Israel from all eternity to all eternity; let all the people cry, Amen, Alleluia. Alleluja. |
