| 2 ἐξηρεύξατο ἡ καρδία μου λόγον ἀγαθόν λέγω ἐγὼ τὰ ἔργα μου τῷ βασιλεῖ ἡ γλῶσσά μου κάλαμος γραμματέως ὀξυγράφου 3 ὡραῖος κάλλει παρὰ τοὺς υἱοὺς τῶν ἀνθρώπων ἐξεχύθη χάρις ἐν χείλεσίν σου διὰ τοῦτο εὐλόγησέν σε ὁ θεὸς εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα 4 περίζωσαι τὴν ῥομφαίαν σου ἐπὶ τὸν μηρόν σου δυνατέ τῇ ὡραιότητί σου καὶ τῷ κάλλει σου 5 καὶ ἔντεινον καὶ κατευοδοῦ καὶ βασίλευε ἕνεκεν ἀληθείας καὶ πραΰτητος καὶ δικαιοσύνης καὶ ὁδηγήσει σε θαυμαστῶς ἡ δεξιά σου 6 τὰ βέλη σου ἠκονημένα δυνατέ λαοὶ ὑποκάτω σου πεσοῦνται ἐν καρδίᾳ τῶν ἐχθρῶν τοῦ βασιλέως 7 ὁ θρόνος σου ὁ θεός εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα τοῦ αἰῶνος ῥάβδος εὐθύτητος ἡ ῥάβδος τῆς βασιλείας σου 8 ἠγάπησας δικαιοσύνην καὶ ἐμίσησας ἀνομίαν διὰ τοῦτο ἔχρισέν σε ὁ θεὸς ὁ θεός σου ἔλαιον ἀγαλλιάσεως παρὰ τοὺς μετόχους σου 9 σμύρνα καὶ στακτὴ καὶ κασία ἀπὸ τῶν ἱματίων σου ἀπὸ βάρεων ἐλεφαντίνων ἐξ ὧν ηὔφρανάν σε 10 θυγατέρες βασιλέων ἐν τῇ τιμῇ σου παρέστη ἡ βασίλισσα ἐκ δεξιῶν σου ἐν ἱματισμῷ διαχρύσῳ περιβεβλημένη πεποικιλμένη 11 ἄκουσον θύγατερ καὶ ἰδὲ καὶ κλῖνον τὸ οὖς σου καὶ ἐπιλάθου τοῦ λαοῦ σου καὶ τοῦ οἴκου τοῦ πατρός σου 12 ὅτι ἐπεθύμησεν ὁ βασιλεὺς τοῦ κάλλους σου ὅτι αὐτός ἐστιν ὁ κύριός σου 13 καὶ προσκυνήσουσιν αὐτῷ θυγατέρες Τύρου ἐν δώροις τὸ πρόσωπόν σου λιτανεύσουσιν οἱ πλούσιοι τοῦ λαοῦ 14 πᾶσα ἡ δόξα αὐτῆς θυγατρὸς βασιλέως ἔσωθεν ἐν κροσσωτοῖς χρυσοῖς περιβεβλημένη πεποικιλμένη 15 ἀπενεχθήσονται τῷ βασιλεῖ παρθένοι ὀπίσω αὐτῆς αἱ πλησίον αὐτῆς ἀπενεχθήσονταί σοι 16 ἀπενεχθήσονται ἐν εὐφροσύνῃ καὶ ἀγαλλιάσει ἀχθήσονται εἰς ναὸν βασιλέως 17 ἀντὶ τῶν πατέρων σου ἐγενήθησάν σοι υἱοί καταστήσεις αὐτοὺς ἄρχοντας ἐπὶ πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν 18 μνησθήσονται τοῦ ὀνόματός σου ἐν πάσῃ γενεᾷ καὶ γενεᾷ διὰ τοῦτο λαοὶ ἐξομολογήσονταί σοι εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα καὶ εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα τοῦ αἰῶνος | 2 Joyful the thoughts that well up from my heart, the King’s honour for my theme; my tongue flows readily as the pen of a swift writer. 3 Thine is more than mortal beauty, thy lips overflow with gracious utterance; the blessings God has granted thee can never fail. 4 Gird on thy sword at thy side, great warrior, 5 gird thyself with all thy majesty and all thy beauty; ride on triumphant, in the name of faithfulness and justice. Dread counsel thy own might shall give thee; 6 so sharp are thy arrows, subduing nations to thy will, daunting the hearts of the king’s enemies. 7 Thy throne, O God, endures for ever and ever, the sceptre of thy royalty is a rod that rules true;[1] 8 thou hast been a friend to right, an enemy to wrong, and God, thy own God, has given thee an unction to bring thee pride beyond any of thy fellows. 9 Thy garments are scented with myrrh, and aloes, and cassia; from ivory palaces there are harps sounding in thy honour. 10 Daughters of kings come out to meet thee; at thy right hand stands the queen, in Ophir gold arrayed. 11 (Listen, my daughter, and consider my words attentively; thou art to forget, henceforward, thy own nation, and the house of thy father; 12 thy beauty, now, is all for the king’s delight; he is thy Lord, and worship belongs to him.) 13 The people of Tyre, too, will have its presents to bring; the noblest of its citizens will be courting thy favour. 14 She comes, the princess, all fair to see, her robe of golden cloth, 15 a robe of rich embroidery, to meet the King. The maidens of her court follow her into thy presence, 16 all rejoicing, all triumphant, as they enter the king’s palace! 17 Thou shalt have sons worthy of thy own fathers, and divide a world between them for their domains. 18 While time lasts, mine it is to keep thy name in remembrance; age after age, nations will do thee honour. | 2 Eructavit cor meum verbum bonum: dico ego opera mea regi. Adducentur regi virgines post eam; proximæ ejus afferentur tibi. 16 Afferentur in lætitia et exsultatione; adducentur in templum regis. 17 Pro patribus tuis nati sunt tibi filii; constitues eos principes super omnem terram. 18 Memores erunt nominis tui in omni generatione et generationem: propterea populi confitebuntur tibi in æternum, et in sæculum sæculi. |
[1] ‘Thy throne, O God’; various other ways of taking these words have been suggested, as, for example, ‘God is (the support of) thy throne’. None of these has met with general acceptance. This verse and the following are applied to our Lord in the Epistle to the Hebrews (1.8).
