1 ᾠδὴ τῶν ἀναβαθμῶν ἐν τῷ ἐπιστρέψαι κύριον τὴν αἰχμαλωσίαν Σιων ἐγενήθημεν ὡς παρακεκλημένοι 2 τότε ἐπλήσθη χαρᾶς τὸ στόμα ἡμῶν καὶ ἡ γλῶσσα ἡμῶν ἀγαλλιάσεως τότε ἐροῦσιν ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν ἐμεγάλυνεν κύριος τοῦ ποιῆσαι με{T'} αὐτῶν 3 ἐμεγάλυνεν κύριος τοῦ ποιῆσαι με{Q'} ἡμῶν ἐγενήθημεν εὐφραινόμενοι 4 ἐπίστρεψον κύριε τὴν αἰχμαλωσίαν ἡμῶν ὡς χειμάρρους ἐν τῷ νότῳ 5 οἱ σπείροντες ἐν δάκρυσιν ἐν ἀγαλλιάσει θεριοῦσιν 6 πορευόμενοι ἐπορεύοντο καὶ ἔκλαιον αἴροντες τὰ σπέρματα αὐτῶν ἐρχόμενοι δὲ ἥξουσιν ἐν ἀγαλλιάσει αἴροντες τὰ δράγματα αὐτῶν | 1 When the Lord gave back Sion her banished sons, we walked like men in a dream; 2 in every mouth was laughter, joy was on every tongue. Among the heathen themselves it was said, What favour the Lord has shewn them! 3 Favour indeed the Lord has shewn us, and our hearts are rejoiced. 4 Deliver us, Lord, from our bondage; our withered hopes, Lord, like some desert water-course renew![1] 5 The men who are sowing in tears will reap, one day, with joy. 6 Mournful enough they go, but with seed to scatter; trust me, they will come back rejoicing, as they carry their sheaves with them. | 1 In convertendo Dominus captivitatem Sion, facti sumus sicut consolati. 2 Tunc repletum est gaudio os nostrum, et lingua nostra exsultatione. Tunc dicent inter gentes: Magnificavit Dominus facere cum eis. 3 Magnificavit Dominus facere nobiscum; facti sumus lætantes. 4 Converte, Domine, captivitatem nostram, sicut torrens in austro. 5 Qui seminant in lacrimis, in exsultatione metent. 6 Euntes ibant et flebant, mittentes semina sua. Venientes autem venient cum exsultatione, portantes manipulos suos. |
[1] Some commentators think that the process of deliverance was still incomplete, only a small number of exiles (for example) having returned from captivity; others, that verse 1 expresses, not something which had actually happened, but an imaginary picture.
